The Table Five prison workshop

Ruescott Melshi first meets Cassian Andor while imprisoned at the Imperial labor facility on Narkina 5. The official StarWars.com Databank places them at Table Five, assembling machinery under strict production quotas. The men have no freedom to choose their work, movement or release terms. The factory rewards output and punishes failure, using group rankings to make workers supervise one another. Melshi is not an Imperial employee simply because he labors inside an Imperial installation. He is an incarcerated person whose work is extracted through control over his body and the threat of punishment. His later career in the Rebel Alliance should not be projected backward onto this first meeting with Cassian.

Cassian as a fellow inmate

Cassian studies the rules of the prison almost as soon as he arrives. Melshi is among the men whose daily labor takes place beside him. Their relationship begins with the concrete problem of living and working in captivity. Shared experience makes trust possible, but it does not immediately turn the entire unit into an organized rebellion. The workers are initially isolated by strict routines, separated into competing teams and encouraged to believe obedience will bring release. These conditions explain why coordinated action is difficult. Cassian's determination to escape eventually brings him into a closer relationship with Kino Loy, while Melshi becomes one of the prisoners who participates in the breakout.

Kino Loy and the elderly Ulaf

Kino Loy acts as the floor manager of Unit 5-2-D. He is himself a prisoner, though guards rely on him to organize productivity and discipline. Ulaf is an older inmate whose strength is failing while he awaits the end of his sentence. His medical emergency exposes the brutal indifference beneath the prison's timetable. The workers eventually learn that a supposedly released person was moved elsewhere within the facility, and the discovery produced deadly consequences. Ulaf does not survive to join the later rebellion. Melshi and the other surviving prisoners must respond to this evidence that the system is designed to retain labor rather than to honor its promise of eventual freedom.

One way out

The prison uprising exploits knowledge of the facility's machinery and procedures. Cassian disrupts electrified floors, other prisoners take risks to seize control, and Kino uses the communication system to rally workers outside their immediate room. Melshi joins the escape. The event depends on many participants who were previously forced to compete against one another. Success is not guaranteed for everyone. Kino's fate remains unresolved after he says he cannot swim at the point where the men are expected to jump into the water. Melshi's subsequent appearance establishes that he survives, but it would be inaccurate to claim that all prisoners from the workroom reach safety together.

A route away from Narkina 5

In Daughter of Ferrix, Cassian and Melshi make it to dry land after leaving the prison. They encounter fishermen and negotiate passage away from the area toward Niamos. The sequence extends their shared problem beyond the walls of the factory: an escapee still needs transport and people willing to help under an authoritarian government. Their relationship has moved from compelled cooperation at an assembly table to an attempt to secure freedom together. Neither man becomes safe merely by reaching shore. The Empire retains the ability to pursue fugitives, and the experience of Narkina 5 gives them knowledge of a prison system whose cruelty has wider political significance.

Entering the Rebel Alliance

The Databank states that Melshi later becomes a sergeant in the Rebel Alliance, continuing to work alongside Cassian. This is an actual political and military affiliation, unlike his forced relationship with the Imperial prison system. Rank places him within an organized resistance to the same regime that once held him captive. The distinction between these institutions is central to his biography. Melshi is neither a permanent victim with no agency nor a soldier whose earlier captivity can be ignored. His history passes through both settings, and the earlier experience informs the story of his later trust in Cassian and willingness to risk his life for others.

The Coruscant rescue attempt

Andor Season 2 continues Melshi's involvement with Cassian and K-2SO. The finale guide describes their efforts around a mission to Coruscant associated with Luthen Rael and Kleya Marki. Melshi's role here places him within a broader network of Rebel intelligence, fieldwork and personal risk. His allies are not confined to the people he knew at Narkina 5. At the same time, it would be misleading to claim he has personally met every prominent Rebel. This dossier identifies connections tied to particular events and avoids turning a shared faction into evidence for friendships that the narrative does not show.

Scarif and the cost of resistance

Melshi serves in Rogue One as a member of the group that attempts to obtain the Death Star plans from Scarif. Cassian Andor, Jyn Erso and K-2SO also take part in the larger mission. The operation is vital to the Rebellion, but its participants face devastating consequences. Melshi's story therefore joins the perspective of an ordinary prison worker to that of a soldier in a dangerous collective campaign. The canon record does not provide a complete family history, a confirmed birth world or a fully documented reason for his original imprisonment. Speculation by creators about his sentence is not equivalent to a confirmed event, and those details are left open.

Institutions, work, and social relations

The anthropological distinction between coercion and affiliation is especially clear across Melshi's two institutional settings. On Narkina 5 he worked because imprisonment and the threat of punishment left him no alternative. Later he served as a sergeant in the Rebel Alliance, carrying a recognized military role within a resistance organization. The Andor prison episodes and the later Rebel campaign document a change in the conditions under which Melshi works with Cassian, rather than one continuous job under two different uniforms.
