Interactive anthropology · Four fields + major subfields
Explore Anthropology Through Star Wars
This Explorer is about what the fields of anthropology can actually do with Star Wars. Each field notices different evidence in the same galaxy: cultural anthropology studies institutions and identity, biological anthropology asks what bodies and environments can tell us, linguistic anthropology studies language and classification, and archaeology reconstructs the past through material remains.

One subject. Four anthropological investigations.
Choose a Star Wars case and watch the evidence change. Cultural, biological, linguistic, and archaeological anthropology can all study the same subject, but they notice different relationships, materials, bodies, institutions, and forms of knowledge.

A society can be studied through belonging, bodies, language, and ruins at the same time.
The case below shows how the four major fields change what counts as evidence and what kind of question becomes visible.
The four-field universe
One galaxy. Four major ways to investigate it.
Select a field to redraw the explorer. Subfields appear as orbiting specializations around the central anthropological problem.
How do people make social worlds?
Cultural anthropology studies learned systems of meaning, institutions, relationships, values, practices, and power. It asks how people create family, religion, economy, politics, identity, ritual, memory, and everyday life.
Medical Anthropology
Health, illness, healing, bodies, institutions, inequality, and culturally shaped ideas of care.
Visual evidence
Anthropology starts by noticing different kinds of evidence
The same Star Wars world can contain institutions, bodies, speech, objects, architecture, memory, and historical traces. The field changes which evidence comes into focus first.

Research challenge
Which fields would you use?
A Mandalorian settlement is abandoned after conflict. Survivors disagree about who belongs, ruins contain damaged armor and household objects, and younger members use different words for old clan identities.

How does a community decide who counts as a legitimate member?
Important note
The boundaries between subfields are porous
Applied anthropology is not limited to one field. Medical anthropology can combine cultural and biological approaches. Bioarchaeology connects archaeology and biological anthropology. Forensic anthropology applies biological anthropology in legal contexts. Historical archaeology combines material evidence with documentary records. Linguistic anthropology often overlaps with cultural anthropology, political anthropology, migration studies, and media research. The point of the four-field model is not to place every question in a permanent box. It is to show how different kinds of evidence can be combined.
