Structure and membership

The Order organized members through training stages, mentorship, councils, temple institutions, archives, missions, and shared rules. During the late Republic, the High Council held major authority over appointments, policy, and relationships with the Senate.

Ideology and legitimacy

Jedi teaching emphasized discipline, compassion, service, non-attachment, knowledge, and alignment with the light side of the Force. The Order also developed institutional norms that shaped family separation, emotional conduct, and obligations to the Republic.

Jedi acted through mediation, investigation, diplomacy, scholarship, lightsaber combat, Force practice, and peacekeeping. The Clone Wars expanded their role into military command, tying the Order more closely to a wartime state.

Historical development

The Jedi endured across many eras but faced repeated political and philosophical crises. Their late-Republic partnership with the state culminated in the Clone Wars and Order 66, after which surviving Jedi were scattered and hunted.
