01 · Orientation

Summary

The Galactic Empire transformed the institutions of the late Republic into a centralized authoritarian state built around executive power, militarization, surveillance, hierarchy, and control of strategic resources.

02 · Organization

Structure and membership

The Emperor stood at the center of authority, supported by the Imperial military, governors, intelligence agencies, ministries, courts, and sector administrations. Power was concentrated upward even when local officials exercised substantial discretion.

03 · Ideas

Ideology and legitimacy

Imperial rule presented centralized order, security, discipline, and unity as answers to the instability of the Clone Wars. In practice, this framework justified political repression, unequal citizenship, military occupation, and the elimination of rivals.

04 · Practice

Methods and power

The Empire governed through law, bureaucracy, taxation, military force, propaganda, surveillance, detention, resource extraction, and selective cooperation with local elites. The Death Star represented the extreme end of a broader system of coercion.

05 · Change over time

Historical development

The Empire emerged when Palpatine reorganized the Republic at the end of the Clone Wars. It expanded military and administrative control, destroyed or subordinated independent institutions, fought a growing rebellion, and fractured after the deaths of Palpatine and Vader at Endor.
