BioWare Closes: The Studio Behind Knights of the Old Republic Ends After 30 Years
BioWare confirms its closure and the end of an in-development Mass Effect project, prompting a new look at its influence on Star Wars storytelling.

Quick read: BioWare announced on October 21 that the studio is closing after more than three decades. Its Star Wars legacy includes the 2003 Knights of the Old Republic; the closure does not itself announce the end of SWTOR.
BioWare confirms the end of its studio
BioWare announced on October 21, 2026 that it is closing after more than thirty years in game development. The studio's own statement named Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic alongside Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Dragon Age, Mass Effect and Anthem as part of its creative history. It also said early development on the next Mass Effect project would stop.
Associated Press reporting places the closure within wider cuts at Electronic Arts. Reports describe hundreds of job losses across the publisher, including staff at BioWare. The human consequences for workers should not be obscured by nostalgia about the games. Studio closures end careers and teams as well as institutional continuity between older and newer projects.
Why Knights of the Old Republic belongs in the story
Released in 2003, BioWare's Knights of the Old Republic invited players to explore an era thousands of years before the films. The game's dialogue choices, party relationships and role-playing rules let players participate in the conflict between Jedi and Sith rather than only watch it. Its treatment of Darth Revan, Bastila Shan, the Jedi Civil War and competing loyalties became central to the Legends-era Old Republic.
The game also demonstrated that Star Wars could sustain a substantial original role-playing narrative away from the Skywalker films. Character decisions and relationships were not simply decorative additions to combat. They structured what players learned and how they interpreted factions. BioWare's work influenced later Star Wars games and remains a major historical reference for the franchise.
What this closure does not establish
The original Knights of the Old Republic is distinct from the later MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic. BioWare was involved in SWTOR's history, but day-to-day development transferred to Broadsword in 2023. The October 2026 BioWare closure is therefore not evidence that SWTOR has shut down. Players should consult the MMO's own official updates for current game status.
Nor does the announcement determine the status of every planned remake or other Star Wars game at a different studio. Corporate history, development ownership and release planning must be checked project by project. IDS will retain the original Knights of the Old Republic in its historical games archive and track any later confirmed effects separately.
