A civil war within Mandalore
Bo-Katan Kryze sought to end Maul's control over Mandalore. With Ahsoka Tano, she requested Republic assistance. Anakin and Obi-Wan were called away to defend Coruscant, leaving Ahsoka and Commander Rex to lead a detachment of the 501st.
A fight inside Sundari
Republic clones and Mandalorian resistance fighters assaulted positions held by Maul's supporters. Ahsoka confronted Maul and eventually captured him. He had anticipated the fall of the Republic but could not prevent his own defeat in this battle.
A victory on the eve of catastrophe
Bo-Katan was positioned to govern after the siege, but the Republic's transformation into the Empire soon overrode the achievement. Ahsoka and Rex were transporting Maul away when Order 66 reached their ship.
Anthropological assessment
Mandalore's siege demonstrates the fragility of local liberation when an ally's wider government changes character. The resistance achieved a military objective without securing lasting independence against the new Imperial regime.

The Siege of Mandalore: source and social analysis
Historical sequence and documented actions
Bo-Katan Kryze sought to end Maul's control of Mandalore and coordinated with Ahsoka Tano. When Anakin and Obi-Wan were recalled to defend Coruscant, Ahsoka and Commander Rex led a Republican force to Sundari. Ahsoka defeated and captured Maul, but the apparent victory occurred just as Order 66 transformed Republic military power and Mandalore faced a new political crisis.
Power, family and institutional consequences
The coalition crossed the boundaries of Jedi identity, Mandalorian faction and Republic military command. Bo-Katan's claim to legitimate local leadership was not identical to Ahsoka's ethical motives or Rex's formal orders. Capturing Maul did not mean Mandalore automatically obtained independent and stable government.
Official media and image interpretation
The Bo-Katan portrait correctly identifies a commander; not an image of Maul's capture. The main historical evidence comes from Revenge of the Sith, The Clone Wars, The Bad Batch and the specific publisher histories linked here. These events overlap in 19 BBY but are not interchangeable episodes.
