- Tribe reunified
In 3000 BBY, Varner Hilts moved from quiet Caretaker to Grand Lord after the Lost Tribe nearly destroyed itself. The crisis had exposed suppressed truths about the Omen, Yaru Korsin, the Tribe's Human slave ancestry under the ancient Sith species, and the fabricated story that the settlers had arrived on Kesh as divine conquerors. Hilts used recovered history and the discovery of Alanciar to give rival factions a new common project.
The Great Crisis destroys the old certainty
Revelations about the Tribe's actual origins discredited myths used to justify Human Sith superiority and founder legitimacy.
Factional violence followed because historical truth threatened the social order built around those myths.
Hilts turns knowledge into a way out
As Caretaker, Hilts knew the old languages and texts well enough to interpret hidden evidence about Alanciar.
That knowledge supplied a future-oriented goal at the moment when the existing system had lost credibility.
The factions choose a historian
Faction leaders who had fought one another accepted Hilts as a leader because he could coordinate survival and expansion.
His authority was therefore negotiated rather than inherited through a simple dynasty.

Why would Sith accept a mild historian as ruler?
Because his archival knowledge solved an immediate legitimacy crisis and gave rival factions a shared project.
Did Hilts tell every Keshiri the complete truth?
No. Later public versions remained censored because the ruling Sith still feared what full disclosure could do to their authority.
Did this end hierarchy?
No. Hilts reformed parts of the system, but the Tribe remained an authoritarian Sith ruling order.
Anthropological assessment
Hilts's rise is a rare case where archival competence becomes the basis of supreme political authority.
It demonstrates that legitimacy crises are contests over interpretation. When the old founding story collapses, the person who can produce a usable new history can become politically indispensable.

Varner Hilts becomes Grand Lord: what the sources establish
Historical facts and dating
Hilts's ascent follows the upheaval surrounding the Tribe's founding Testament. His knowledge of historical records enabled political leadership after the Great Crisis and provided a basis for the program later called the Hilts Restoration.
Political anthropology and material culture
This sequence makes historical custody central to authority. Whoever could explain the Tribe's origins could challenge inherited privileges and direct collective rebuilding. Hilts did not simply acquire control through a battlefield victory.
Dating and source quality
These deep-time dates are from Legends chronologies or later references. An event dated to a year does not establish other events on that date. Unconfirmed private motives, personal dialogue, or exact population figures remain unknown.
