In 3969 BBY, the five members of the Jedi Covenant's First WatchCircle each received a Padawan. The assignments joined the Covenant's prophetic security mission to ordinary Jedi mentorship. Zayne Carrick was assigned to Lucien Draay; Oojoh, Shad Jelavan, Kamlin, and Gharn were paired with the other four seers.
Mentorship inside a hidden institution
The Masters occupied two roles: public Jedi teachers and secret prophetic operatives.
Their Padawans entered relationships shaped by information asymmetry.
The future massacre is not inevitable
At assignment, the students were ordinary apprentices.
Later violence resulted from Covenant interpretation of prophecy, not from anything inherently dangerous about the Padawans.
A surveillance organization becomes a teaching community
The First WatchCircle—Feln, Lucien Draay, Q'Anilia, Raana Tey, and Xamar—received five Padawans and moved them into the Jedi Tower on Taris. The arrangement fused ordinary mentorship with the Covenant's secret prophetic mission.
That overlap would become disastrous. The Masters did not simply teach the Padawans; they also began reading the students through prophetic categories, allowing fear about a possible future Sith to reshape the trust required for apprenticeship.

Why exactly five Padawans?
The symmetry became important because Covenant members tried to connect the five students to Krynda Draay's Prophecy of the Five.
Did the Padawans know about the Covenant's secret mission?
Not in the same way their Masters did. That information imbalance made the apprenticeship relationship dangerously unequal.
Anthropological assessment
The WatchCircle assignments show the ethical problems created when secret institutional missions are embedded inside relationships of trust.
Students cannot meaningfully assess a mentorship when crucial purposes are deliberately withheld from them.
