REPUBLIC DEFENSE OF ALDERAAN
Historical chronology and documented limits
Darth Malgus invaded Alderaan in 3667 BBY during the Great Galactic War, attacking the capital and taking members of the royal household captive. Republic troopers under Jace Malcom fought from the Juran Mountains while Jedi Knight Satele Shan joined the counteroffensive. Malcom's unit suffered severe losses. Satele's confrontation with Malgus and the remaining Republic resistance halted the Imperial assault, although the wider war continued. The SWTOR Hope cinematic dramatizes this battle and should not be treated as raw footage of every single fighting unit.
Anthropological reading and social consequences
The battle linked aristocratic legitimacy with civilian and military protection: the capture of royalty served a political purpose as well as a tactical one. Republic resistance depended upon soldiers' morale, communications and knowledge of mountain terrain, not simply the feats of the Jedi. The cinematic turns this history into an evocative heroic narrative, while an archive should identify the distinction between stylized storytelling and an exhaustive casualty record.
Separate this event from later consequences
REPUBLIC DEFENSE OF ALDERAAN occurred in or around 3667 BBY. Not every political or personal consequence happened in the same year. A named battle may be a stage of a prolonged war, while a person's career title may have been gained decades after their birth or recruitment.

Why this moment matters
Symbolic worlds matter because attacks on them are interpreted as attacks on political values, not only territory. Alderaan became a powerful Republic morale story.

An Imperial defeat on a symbol of Republic ideals
The Sith invasion of Alderaan sought more than valuable ground. The Empire targeted a world widely associated with Republic diplomacy and political ideals, seeking to demonstrate that even the Republic's most admired member systems could be overwhelmed. The assault placed members of the royal family in Imperial custody. In the Hope cinematic, Jace Malcom and Republic soldiers face Darth Malgus's forces, while Satele Shan's arrival helps turn the fight. The wider official SWTOR account establishes the defeat of the invasion and its significance for Republic morale.
The event also shaped Alderaan's later relationship to the Senate. Its inhabitants had experienced the direct cost of war and the Republic's belated military response. When the Treaty of Coruscant was signed years later, the concessions provoked fierce opposition from Alderaanian leaders. The 3667 BBY victory and the later political break must remain separate events, connected by the memory of invasion and the meaning of loyalty.
Political symbolism changes battlefield priorities
A world identified with unity and peace can attract attack precisely because damaging it sends a message to other members of a political alliance. The Republic's relief effort was therefore simultaneously a military defense and a statement about the future of the federation.
A victory that makes compromise harder
Alderaan's experience helped inspire defenders but could also harden expectations that Republic leaders must resist further concessions. When the Senate later accepted the Treaty, that earlier history contributed to arguments about whether the government had defended its partners.
Did the 3667 BBY defense prevent Alderaan's later civil war?
No. The invasion was defeated, but the Treaty and subsequent disputes among noble houses created a separate later political crisis.

Historical context: The Alderaan campaign
A battlefield success against Sith forces does not by itself end the wider war or settle the planet's political future.
Anthropological perspective: A military event is also a struggle over legitimacy, resources and the institutions that shape daily life. These connections are interpretive rather than additional unrecorded plot events.

Great Galactic War · expanded source analysis
A planetary battle told through a selective cinematic
BioWare's official Hope trailer describes how Malgus times his assault to exploit an apparent absence of Republic fleet protection, leaving small units of troopers and Jedi to resist. Havoc Squad plays an important role as the Imperial advance threatens the capital. Satele Shan's confrontation with Malgus is a dramatic turning point, but the film condenses military activity into a character-centered scene; its camera cannot document every unit or civilian settlement involved.
Alderaan's political importance involves noble households, Republic military commitments, and a wider population exposed to an invasion they did not individually choose. The battlefield victory depends on local defense and the return of military support, not solely on the strength of one Jedi. The distinctive landscape and social institutions should be distinguished from later Alderaanian politics at the 3653 BBY peace conference. That conference does not occur during this attack; it follows many additional years of war.
