A probe reveals the hidden base

The Empire dispatched probe droids in its search for the Rebels. One probe discovered evidence of the Alliance's presence on Hoth. Darth Vader sent a fleet and ground forces, but Admiral Ozzel's premature exit from hyperspace gave the Rebels enough warning to activate their defensive shield.

Walkers cross the ice

General Veers commanded heavy AT-AT walkers against Rebel trenches and artillery. Snowspeeder pilots including Luke, Wedge and Rogue Group attempted to slow the assault with blasters and tow cables. Imperial armor eventually reached the shield generator and destroyed it.

The evacuation proceeds under fire

Leia and other officers coordinated transports while the Rebels used their ion cannon to open paths past Imperial ships. Many personnel escaped, although the Alliance lost equipment and lives. Luke departed separately for Dagobah, and Han's Millennium Falcon became trapped in a desperate chase.

Anthropological assessment

Hoth demonstrates evacuation as an organized military and civilian task. The objective was no longer to retain land at any cost but to preserve people, skills and equipment necessary for a continued political struggle.

Did the Rebel Alliance defeat and capture Vader's entire Hoth army?

No. Hoth was an Imperial victory and the Rebels evacuated their base.

A costly defensive success and defeat

The film and Echo Base Databank describe a rapid evacuation under attack. General Veers's AT-ATs advance on the shield generator while Rogue Group's snowspeeders try to delay the assault. Luke's gunner Dak Ralter dies, and Rebel personnel depend on the ion cannon and transports to escape the Imperial blockade. Vader ultimately enters Echo Base after the surface defenses are breached.

The battle should not be described either as a clean Rebel victory or as the capture of every member of the Alliance. Destroying the shield generator defeated the base defense, while portions of the personnel and fleet got away. The historically useful distinction is between holding territory and accomplishing an evacuation under fire. Collective survival comes at substantial material and human cost.

The Battle of Hoth: survive to fight

The Empire discovered Echo Base with a probe droid and moved military forces to Hoth. The Alliance used its ion cannon and defensive units to protect transports departing through the Imperial blockade. Lucasfilm's Databank calls the battle a costly Rebel defeat even though important personnel were evacuated. That distinction is central: a successful extraction does not turn the loss of the base into a military victory.

The ground defenses were not an end in themselves. Officers, pilots, medical crews and technicians coordinated routes out of the installation while Imperial walkers broke through. The defenders' allocation of scarce time and vehicles shows why evacuation is an institutional activity, not just a dramatic flight by named heroes. Han's freighter and Luke's departure follow the same crisis but should not stand in for the fate of every transport or soldier.

Research judgment: Did the Alliance retain Echo Base because transports successfully escaped?

Explanation: No. It lost the base and substantial matériel while preserving enough people and ships to continue.
