Sith forces breach Belsavis prison
What actually happened and when?
During the renewed Galactic War around 3641 BBY Sith Imperial troops attacked the secret prison world Belsavis. The operation exploited local instability and prison security failures, unleashing dangerous detainees and eventually enabling the six Dread Masters to escape. The Republic had secretly held these Sith prisoners since their capture in 3668, despite publicly allowing people to believe them dead. The Dread Masters' later operations are separate consequences of the Belsavis breach and should not be assigned to their earlier capture date.
Identity, institutions and anthropology
Belsavis reveals the political risks of classified imprisonment. The Republic preserved prisoners thought to be dangerous while leaving many citizens unaware of their detention or of the conditions under which they were held. The Empire's assault turned hidden carceral infrastructure into a major strategic liability. The story raises questions about security, transparency, confinement and whether a government can claim safety from a danger it has merely relocated outside public oversight.
Interpret the chronology without turning inference into fact
This archive distinguishes the recorded action in 3641 BBY from later outcomes and adaptations. Public reports, intelligence assessments, retrospective histories and characters' private claims are not automatically equivalent types of evidence. Events without an exact contemporary date are marked approximately.

Anthropological assessment
Hidden prisons preserve unresolved conflicts. When secrecy and containment fail, old enemies can re-enter history decades after their apparent removal.

The escape that reversed a classified Republic victory
The Sith Empire's operation on Belsavis threatened a network of Republic detention facilities long kept out of ordinary public view. Its consequences were not limited to territorial control. Among the people released from confinement were the Dread Masters, whose previous capture had removed them from active Imperial service. Their liberation changed an old security achievement into the opening stage of a far wider crisis.
Republic commanders had treated secrecy as a strategic necessity, yet the prison's existence and vulnerability mattered once hostile forces obtained access. The escape showed that a classified prison did not end a dangerous group's history. Later official archival reporting connects the Masters' freedom on Belsavis with campaigns of fear and violence on other worlds and with the later confrontation on Oricon. These developments should not be placed on a single day in the 3641 BBY entry.
The institutional cost of keeping enemies alive
Secret imprisonment offers the possibility of containment without execution. It also places responsibility on future officials, who may inherit prisoners without firsthand knowledge of how or why they were captured. The prison becomes a political commitment stretching beyond the war in which it was founded.
An invasion may target more than a planet
The strategic value of Belsavis included information, prisoners and facilities. Taking a world can release hidden actors and destabilize other systems even before an invading army secures every location. A connected chronology must follow the people who leave as well as the armies that arrive.
Did the Dread Masters' defeat on Oricon occur as part of the original Belsavis invasion?
No. Their rescue on Belsavis was an earlier event; their independent terror campaign and final confrontation on Oricon occurred later.
