A planet known for diplomacy and culture

Alderaan was a peaceful Core World with longstanding traditions of civic administration, education, art and support for refugees. Bail Organa and his daughter Leia had used political office and diplomatic resources to assist the emergence of a rebel coalition against the Empire.

A threat designed to force compliance

Grand Moff Tarkin sought the location of the Alliance base from his prisoner Leia. He threatened her homeworld with the newly completed Death Star. Despite her response, he ordered the station's superlaser fired at Alderaan in a display meant to frighten all other systems into obedience.

Mass death and the erasure of a homeworld

The attack annihilated Alderaan and killed its inhabitants, including Bail and Breha Organa. Leia survived because she was imprisoned offworld. Luke, Han, Obi-Wan and Chewbacca later arrived to find only an asteroid field where the planet had been.

Anthropological assessment

Alderaan is the clearest demonstration of genocidal state terror in the original film. Its destruction attacked a political symbol, a population, and an accumulated cultural landscape simultaneously. Survivors were forced to rebuild their identity without an ancestral homeland.

Alderaan is destroyed

Original story and chronology

Grand Moff Tarkin ordered the first Death Star to destroy Alderaan despite the planet's substantial civic and cultural institutions. Princess Leia was held aboard the battle station and forced to watch as her homeworld was annihilated. Bail and Breha Organa and countless residents died. The strike demonstrated the superweapon's capacity for coercion and mass killing even against a world not mounting a conventional military attack.

Social history and political consequences

Alderaan's destruction was not simply an illustration of a weapon's engineering. It eliminated households, archives, local political traditions and the possibility of ordinary cultural continuity. Treating the dead as a single statistic would obscure the loss of a society whose people had different occupations and opinions.

Why 1 BBY rather than 0 BBY?

These events take place shortly before the Battle of Yavin. Lucasfilm's modern dating convention uses the Battle of Yavin as year zero, not a full 0 BBY year. Previous duplicate pages with a 0 BBY suffix will be redirected to the 1 BBY entries.
