A routine purchase changes a family

Owen Lars bought R2-D2 and C-3PO from Jawas on Tatooine. Luke discovered part of Leia's recording while cleaning R2-D2. The astromech escaped in an attempt to complete his mission, drawing Luke and C-3PO into the wastes.

A rescue and an old name

Tusken Raiders attacked Luke, and Obi-Wan Kenobi rescued him. The older man identified himself as a former Jedi and gave Luke the lightsaber once carried by Anakin Skywalker, describing parts of the father's past without revealing that Vader and Anakin were the same person.

Choosing an uncertain future

Luke initially wanted to stay near his aunt and uncle. After Imperial troops traced the droids to the homestead and killed Owen and Beru, he joined Obi-Wan in seeking passage offworld with the stolen plans.

Anthropological assessment

Luke's transition from farm labor to political action came through information, violence and loss. It should not be flattened into a story in which he simply abandoned a comfortable home out of adventure-seeking.

Luke discovers Leia's message

Documented historical sequence

After Owen Lars bought R2-D2 and C-3PO from Jawas, Luke Skywalker heard part of Leia's recorded appeal to Obi-Wan. The astromech went in search of the Jedi, prompting Luke to leave the farm. Imperial troops killed Owen and Beru while searching for the plans, leaving Luke without his guardians.

Institutions, identity and material life

The plans moved through a network of droid ownership and repair rather than an official Rebel courier route. Luke's initial involvement grew from ordinary household labor and his relationships with the droids. The violence at the Lars farm converted a family crisis into a choice to resist Imperial rule.

Why 1 BBY, rather than 0 BBY?

Recent Star Wars chronologies use the Battle of Yavin as the zero point. Rogue One and events immediately before that battle belong to 1 BBY rather than a separate 0 BBY year. The character or story illustration at the top provides context, not a photograph of the entire event.
