R2-D2 serves aboard Naboo and Republic craft, accompanies Anakin Skywalker during the Clone Wars, carries the Death Star plans to Tatooine, supports Luke Skywalker and the Rebel Alliance, and remains connected to the Skywalker family into the Resistance era. His continuity across institutions gives him an unusual relationship to political memory.
Technical labor and autonomy
Astromechs are built for navigation, repair, diagnostics, and starfighter support, but R2 repeatedly acts beyond narrow task instructions. He improvises repairs, accesses computer systems, conceals information, rescues allies, and makes decisions during crises. The films and series treat his competence as both mechanical labor and individual agency.
Memory matters
Unlike C-3PO, R2 does not undergo a memory wipe at the end of the Republic. He therefore carries knowledge across the transition from Republic to Empire and later into the New Republic and Resistance periods. That retained memory often gives him information other characters have lost.
Relationships
R2 is closely associated with Padmé Amidala, Anakin Skywalker, C-3PO, Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, and later members of the Resistance. Those relationships make him part of households, military units, and political movements rather than merely assigned equipment.
Material culture
R2-D2 is also one of the franchise's most reproduced designs across action figures, LEGO, trading cards, replicas, household products, and promotional material. His collecting history shows how a fictional service droid became a durable visual symbol of Star Wars.

Technical labor with unusual autonomy
R2-D2 spends much of the saga performing ordinary astromech work: navigation, repair, data access, diagnostics, and ship support. The unusual part is how often the droid makes independent decisions about when and how to perform that work.
Those decisions repeatedly affect political events, making the line between tool and agent difficult to maintain.
Memory across generations
Unlike many droids whose memories are routinely wiped, R2 retains knowledge across the Republic, Empire, Rebellion, and later generations. That gives the droid a continuity few organic characters possess.
R2’s memory becomes an informal archive connecting Anakin, Padmé, Luke, Leia, and newer heroes. The character demonstrates how institutional history can survive in a body treated legally and socially as property.
