Dating and method: BBY measures years before the Battle of Yavin. Approximate dates are labeled. The research lab distinguishes source events from interpretation, and image captions identify representative visuals.
In 17 BBY, Galen Erso, Lyra Erso and their young daughter Jyn flee Imperial supervision with the help of Saw Gerrera. They move to the remote world Lah'mu to build a quiet agricultural life beyond the research project Galen had been drawn into.
Research becomes an Imperial priority
Galen was a talented scientist whose knowledge of kyber crystals made him important to Orson Krennic's secret weapons development. He was told that the work would benefit energy research, but the political purpose of the program was far more destructive.
Lyra questions the arrangement
Lyra recognized the danger in Krennic's manipulation and helped Galen seek a way to escape. Saw Gerrera supplied assistance that allowed the family to disappear from the normal channels of Imperial monitoring.
A new life on Lah'mu
The Ersos settled on a remote farm, attempting to live without direct involvement in the Empire's military projects. For Jyn, the farm became a home, but the family remained vulnerable because the Empire had not forgotten Galen's expertise.
Scientific labor under coercion
The story illustrates how an authoritarian government can hide military research inside civilian scientific work. Galen's ability to make technological discoveries did not mean he consented to their use in a planet-killing weapon.

Did Krennic abandon the search for Galen after the escape?
No. Krennic eventually tracked the family to Lah'mu and forced Galen back into Imperial service.

The Ersos seek refuge on Lah'mu: what the original story establishes
Source-grounded history
Galen Erso and his family fled a life increasingly controlled by Orson Krennic's research interests. With assistance from Saw Gerrera, Galen, Lyra and their daughter Jyn relocated to remote Lah'mu and adopted a farming existence. Their apparent quiet depended on avoiding the Imperial networks that wanted Galen's kyber-crystal expertise. The refuge preceded their later discovery and forcible separation.
Political anthropology and material consequences
Changing residence can provide temporary autonomy but does not erase the political claims of a powerful employer or state. The family used agricultural labor, isolation and local trust to build privacy. Jyn's later public role in the Rebellion should not be read into her childhood as if the hidden farm were a Rebel base.
Publication and date limits
This is a Canon event. The listed BBY placement sometimes comes from later chronologies rather than dialogue in the original story. Media publication years are separate from the fictional date. Historical interpretation is marked as analysis, not additional dialogue.
