A weapon designer working under coercion

Galen Erso was being held within the Empire's scientific program at a concealed refinery and research station on rain-soaked Eadu. His knowledge of kyber crystal energy had been used to advance the Death Star. He outwardly complied with Krennic, but secretly inserted a destructive vulnerability into the station's reactor design.

Two competing orders

Cassian was ordered by Alliance Intelligence to assassinate Galen, while Jyn hoped to reunite with her father and convince him to share what he knew. Cassian reached a position from which he could shoot Galen, then chose not to fire. The Alliance, unaware of the changed situation, had already dispatched an airstrike against the installation.

A final meeting between father and daughter

Alliance aircraft bombed the facility. Galen was mortally wounded and died after Jyn reached him. The raid prevented her from recovering him alive, and it made the exact technical plans even more important, because his recorded warning had already explained that their reactor flaw could be exploited.

Anthropological assessment

Eadu distinguishes personal responsibility from the institutions that constrain it. Galen contributed knowledge under threat, Cassian faced an order he could refuse, and a remote military strike destroyed the opportunity for a family reunion. These actions cannot be understood by labeling all technical work as freely given support for the Empire.

Did Cassian kill Galen with the assassination shot he had been ordered to take?

No. Cassian did not fire. Galen died during the subsequent Alliance bombing of the research facility.

Galen Erso dies on Eadu

Original story and chronology

Galen Erso worked under Imperial pressure at an Eadu kyber research facility while quietly preparing evidence of a weakness he built into the Death Star design. Rebel officers launched an air strike against the installation, fearing that the weapons program was close to completion. Jyn reached her father shortly before his death, but the strike killed him. The attack complicated her trust in the Alliance's military leadership.

Social history and political consequences

Galen's scientific labor was shaped by a coercive institution that controlled his family and options for refusal. Inserting a flaw into the weapon was a form of concealed resistance through technical work. The Alliance's attack shows tensions between urgent strategy and the dangers faced by scientists, workers and family members at the target.

Why 1 BBY rather than 0 BBY?

These events take place shortly before the Battle of Yavin. Lucasfilm's modern dating convention uses the Battle of Yavin as year zero, not a full 0 BBY year. Previous duplicate pages with a 0 BBY suffix will be redirected to the 1 BBY entries.
