Around 1002 BBY, Jedi general Hoth organized the Republic's Jedi combatants into the Army of Light. The force was built to confront Kaan's Brotherhood of Darkness, which had brought many previously divided Sith factions under one command. Its creation reflected the extraordinary militarization of the Jedi during the final years of the New Sith Wars.
A wartime Jedi institution
For centuries the Jedi had been involved in wars and governance. The Brotherhood's campaigns nevertheless created renewed pressure to combine Jedi fighting strength into an independent organization. Hoth's Army of Light provided a centralized command capable of confronting Sith armies on their own terms.
Success and a heavy cost
The Army of Light mounted campaigns against Sith-controlled areas before its costly battles on Ruusan. Its commanders had to manage competing priorities of battlefield success and protection of Republic worlds. Relations between Hoth and other Jedi leaders, including Farfalla, were sometimes strained.
A later reform would dissolve it
The Army of Light became a symbol of the emergency conditions that shaped Jedi behavior before 1000 BBY. After the defeat of the Brotherhood, the Ruusan Reformations disbanded the force and restricted the Order's direct military role.
Anthropological assessment
Military organizations can emerge rapidly under perceived existential threat and persist as institutions with their own interests. The Army of Light shows why returning from wartime governance requires decisions about command authority, training, and the legitimate use of force.

Lord Hoth organizes the Army of Light
Story evidence and chronology
Jedi general Hoth assembled an army to combat Skere Kaan's Brotherhood of Darkness near the conclusion of the New Sith Wars. The campaign culminated at Ruusan. The founding of the Army of Light belongs to the years before the final battle and should not be silently redated to the outcome of that battle.
Society, coercion and institutional change
A formally organized Jedi army shows how religious institutions can take on direct military responsibilities in a state crisis. It also changes how soldiers, commanders and populations experience Jedi authority. The Ruusan Reformations later altered this arrangement but did not precede the army's formation.
