In 1000 BBY, the war between Kaan's Brotherhood of Darkness and the Jedi Army of Light reached its final catastrophe at Ruusan. The Sith unleashed a thought bomb, a destructive Force ritual that killed and trapped many of the combatants, including Kaan and Jedi general Hoth. The surviving Jedi won control of the battlefield, and the Brotherhood ceased to exist as a functioning Sith army.

Years of fighting narrow into one world

Multiple engagements brought increasingly exhausted armies to Ruusan. Both the Brotherhood and the Army of Light committed enormous resources as their campaigns became centered on the planet. The final battle followed earlier clashes and deep internal divisions among the Sith and Jedi leaders.

Kaan unleashes a thought bomb

Darth Bane had learned of a destructive ritual and manipulated Kaan into using it. Believing the weapon could end the battle in his favor, Kaan gathered Sith Lords to complete the ritual. Lord Hoth and a group of Jedi confronted them but could not prevent its release. The resulting catastrophe killed those caught in its effects and trapped Force-sensitive spirits.

The end of an era, not the end of the Sith

The thought bomb destroyed the Brotherhood's leadership and much of the Army of Light's fighting strength. Other Jedi survived and the Republic emerged as the political victor. Bane also survived, and the Jedi mistakenly believed the organized Sith threat had vanished.

Anthropological assessment

Ruusan became a founding historical marker for later Republic institutions. A war's end can be commemorated as national renewal while concealing the continued existence of an underground adversary. The physical and memorial landscapes of the planet acquired meaning from the immense loss.

Did the thought bomb destroy Darth Bane?

No. Bane survived and went on to found the secret Rule of Two lineage.

Historical sequence, material evidence and political authority

The Seventh Battle of Ruusan: the historical record

The Army of Light and Brotherhood of Darkness met in the last major battle of the New Sith Wars. Kaan's thought bomb killed or trapped many Force-sensitive combatants, while Bane survived outside the main catastrophe. The conflict ended the Brotherhood's open Sith military order but did not end Sith continuity.

Anthropological assessment

Ruusan shows how charismatic military leadership can produce collective disaster. The thought bomb annihilated members of both sides despite their opposing objectives. Collective memory of the event later justified restrictions on the Jedi and helped Bane rationalize a concealed Sith organization.
