The Alliance recruits an unlikely participant
After gaining evidence that the Empire had developed a planet-destroying weapon, Alliance Intelligence sent Cassian Andor and K-2SO to locate Jyn Erso. She was held in an Imperial prison transport after a life disrupted by the forced separation of her family and years of involvement with Saw Gerrera's partisans. The rebels broke her out because they needed access to her father, Galen, not because she had already pledged allegiance to their government.
A message from an Imperial pilot
The defecting cargo pilot Bodhi Rook had brought information from Galen Erso to Saw Gerrera on Jedha. The rebel leaders believed Jyn could persuade Saw to share the message, since the two had known each other during her upbringing. Cassian also received secret orders to kill Galen if necessary, an objective unknown to Jyn.
A reluctant journey begins
Jyn agreed to travel with Cassian and K-2SO after being promised the chance to learn about her father. Her journey crossed political boundaries between the Alliance's formal intelligence system and the independent militant network operated by Saw. She therefore entered a movement that was already divided over how to confront the Empire.
Anthropological assessment
The rescue illustrates recruitment through kinship and the asymmetry of information. The Alliance valued Jyn's relationship to her father, but her own goal was personal. Her later commitment to rebellion developed through experience rather than appearing automatically when her prison cell opened.

Did Jyn already belong to the Rebel Alliance when she was released from Wobani?
No. The Alliance recruited her because of her connection to Galen Erso and Saw Gerrera.

Jyn is freed from Imperial custody
Original story and chronology
Jyn Erso was detained by the Empire and transported from Wobani when Alliance personnel freed her so Cassian Andor could investigate a message connected to her father. She had spent years surviving through aliases and separation from family. The Rebel Council did not initially receive an eager volunteer; they needed a person who might reach Saw Gerrera and help uncover the superweapon project.
Social history and political consequences
A person released from imprisonment does not automatically share her rescuers' political aims. Jyn's mistrust had roots in earlier violence and unstable care. The Alliance's decision to recruit her reveals how intelligence networks depend on personal histories and relationships that formal organizations cannot simply order into existence.
Why 1 BBY rather than 0 BBY?
These events take place shortly before the Battle of Yavin. Lucasfilm's modern dating convention uses the Battle of Yavin as year zero, not a full 0 BBY year. Previous duplicate pages with a 0 BBY suffix will be redirected to the 1 BBY entries.
