In 1010 BBY, the former Jedi Skere Kaan brought together the warring Sith factions and founded the Brotherhood of Darkness. His organization claimed to replace destructive internal rivalry with shared purpose. The Brotherhood became the major Sith force during the final decade of the New Sith Wars, eventually bringing its armies to Ruusan.

A Jedi breaks with his own institution

Kaan had served as a Jedi Master before becoming convinced that the existing Republic and Jedi leadership could not adequately resolve galactic instability. He left the Order and turned against it. His public language of reform concealed the creation of another militant Sith hierarchy.

A new arrangement for rival Sith

The Brotherhood's creed presented its powerful Sith Lords as equals within a common council. The political design was a response to generations of infighting. Kaan sought to direct their ambitions outward rather than permit constant internal destruction, but the apparent equality of the rulers obscured differences in their power and resources.

Conquest and consolidation

Kaan's followers seized control of Sith enclaves and made Korriban an important center of education and recruitment. The Brotherhood recruited armies, reestablished the Sith academy, and fought the Republic and Jedi. Its immediate military effectiveness came from bringing separate factions under a recognizable organization.

Anthropological assessment

The Brotherhood was an attempted institutional repair conducted through a new ideological language. It reveals how claims of equality can be used to coordinate rival elites without necessarily producing equitable relations for their subjects.

Kaan forms the Brotherhood of Darkness

Story evidence and chronology

Skere Kaan, a former Jedi who became a Sith leader, created the Brotherhood of Darkness as an attempt to reduce destructive competition among Sith Lords. The organization went on to fight the Army of Light. Its formation is not a record of Darth Bane's much later reform.

Society, coercion and institutional change

Kaan's solution to factional fragmentation was to build a shared hierarchy and identity. Promises of status to multiple Sith Lords could encourage cooperation while leaving tensions over individual ambition unresolved. Comparing Kaan and Bane requires distinguishing their rival doctrines.
