A leadership strategy loses support
Kenth Hamner served as acting Grand Master while Luke Skywalker was exiled. He argued for a restrained approach to Chief of State Daala, fearing that open confrontation would damage the Order and its public standing. Other Jedi Masters increasingly believed that the government's actions required stronger resistance. The disagreement was about strategy as well as character, and it grew more urgent during the Temple siege.
A mission whose launch is disputed
The Council decided to dispatch a group of StealthX starfighters to aid Luke against the Lost Tribe of Sith. Hamner believed that launching armed Jedi fighters while the Alliance was blockading the Temple risked an irreversible political crisis. After the Council removed him from his leadership position, he tried to prevent the mission from leaving the Operations Hangar.
Saba confronts Hamner in the hangar
Saba Sebatyne and Cilghal confronted the former acting Grand Master. A struggle developed. Saba defeated Hamner and briefly held him with the Force over a fall, but he threw his lightsaber toward vital hangar controls. She redirected her attention to intercept the weapon and lost her grip on him. Hamner fell to his death.
An institution forced to process internal violence
The death caused serious grief and guilt. Hamner was not an agent of Abeloth or an ordinary Imperial officer; he was a senior Jedi whose understanding of duty had become incompatible with the Council's. The loss illustrated how an institution trying to preserve unity could fracture under pressure from its own political environment.
Saba assumes responsibility
The Council urged Saba to serve as acting Grand Master until Luke could return. Her administration prepared to challenge Daala directly and address continuing security threats. The new leader entered office with a legacy of conflict that could not be reduced to a simple victory for one faction.
Anthropological assessment
The episode concerns procedural legitimacy in a crisis. When a governing body and its leader no longer agree about lawful authority, even an institution founded around restraint can experience deadly internal conflict. The event also warns against treating a public leadership transition as an uncomplicated change of names.
