In 3840 BBY, the species later known as lurkers became known to the wider galaxy after being discovered on a jungle world near the Torch Nebula. The record concerns a bestiary animal identified by outside biologists, not proof of a sapient civilization.

THE LURKERS ENTER THE RECORD
Evidence, dates and historical boundaries
Star Wars: The Old Republic's ‘Lurker’ bestiary codex, read during story events around 3640 BBY, states that lurkers had been recognized in the wider galaxy about two hundred years earlier. That produces an approximate 3840 BBY date. Hutt Cartel biologists suspected an unnamed jungle world at the Torch Nebula's edge was their original homeworld, but the game does not prove this conclusion. The codex describes lurkers as lean, amphibious pack-oriented carrion-eaters that prefer tropical habitats and attack aggressively in groups.
Anthropological interpretation
A discovery date is a date when outsiders record and categorize organisms, not necessarily a date when the organisms originated or when a world first had life. The tendency to label a creature ‘known’ only after it appears in commercial and scientific networks is a form of knowledge bias. The bestiary does not establish a sapient lurker civilization, government or language. Treating it as a sentient species would therefore impose unsupported humanlike social institutions upon a fictional animal.
Trace the historical sequence
- Lurkers inhabit worlds before galactic scientists catalogue them
- Biologists date wider recognition to roughly 3840 BBY
- By the SWTOR era lurkers are observed on multiple planets

Discovery outside the great wars
The event belongs to exploration history rather than a major state conflict.
It reminds us that the galaxy continued to expand socially during long intervals between famous wars.
Anthropological assessment
Discovery dates often reflect when outsiders enter an archive, not when a people begins to exist.
The phrase 'discovered' therefore records a change in galactic knowledge rather than the origin of the population itself.
