A rescue with several layers
The operation began when the droids entered Jabba's court, followed by Leia disguised as bounty hunter Boushh and Chewbacca presented as her captive. Lando had already infiltrated the palace. Leia successfully unfroze Han but Jabba discovered the deception and imprisoned them.
Luke confronts Jabba
Luke arrived as a Jedi Knight and made another offer to bargain. Jabba refused and dropped him into a pit with a rancor. Luke defeated the creature but was sentenced to die above the Sarlacc alongside Han and Chewbacca.
The barge assault changes everything
At the Great Pit of Carkoon, R2-D2 delivered Luke's hidden lightsaber. The rebels attacked their guards. Leia used the chain fastening her to Jabba to strangle the crime lord, and the team fled as the sail barge burned and exploded.
Anthropological analysis
The rescue was a confrontation with personal domination and coercive display. Leia's use of her own chain against Jabba reversed an emblem of captivity and made the collapse of his court part of the political story of resistance.

Did Han escape as soon as Leia released him from carbonite?
No. Jabba captured them again, and they escaped during the later battle at the Sarlacc.

Infiltration, court politics and escape
The rescue unfolds in multiple phases. Lando infiltrates Jabba's palace, Leia arrives disguised as Boushh, and Luke later enters as a Jedi. The attempt to secure Han fails peacefully, leading Jabba to order executions at the Great Pit of Carkoon. There, Luke and his companions fight their way off the barge while Leia breaks free from her captor.
The operation is not simply one duel. It depends on disguise, language, alliance, local knowledge and the specific authority Jabba exercises over captives and retainers. His court has rituals of humiliation and punishment, while those subordinated to it do not share one viewpoint. The destruction of his entourage helps free Han but does not automatically resolve every struggle for power on Tatooine.
