A ground mission makes the fleet attack possible

The Empire's second Death Star was protected by a powerful shield projected from the forest moon of Endor. The Alliance sent commandos led by Han Solo and accompanied by Leia, Chewbacca and other specialists to disable the installation before its fleet reached the system.

The visitors encounter a local society

The strike team met Ewoks, residents whose villages, family relationships and use of forest terrain reflected a developed social world of their own. Leia was helped by an Ewok after becoming separated from her companions. C-3PO's translation abilities helped establish communication with the tribe.

An alliance overturns the trap

Imperial troops captured the commandos near the shield bunker. Ewok fighters launched a coordinated attack that disrupted the garrison and allowed the rebels to reach and destroy the installation. Their weapons and forest knowledge offset parts of the Empire's technological advantage.

Anthropological analysis

The battle cannot be explained as a victory achieved solely by offworld visitors. The Ewoks chose to participate, bringing knowledge and military capacity to a coalition whose success depended on local agency.

The Empire's second Death Star was protected by a powerful shield projected from the forest moon of Endor. The Alliance sent commandos led by Han Solo and accompanied by Leia, Chewbacca and other specialists to disable the installation before its fleet reached the system.

Local knowledge changes the ground battle

The Ewoks are inhabitants of Endor's forest moon, not merely convenient auxiliaries invented for the Alliance. After initial misunderstandings, C-3PO's story and the Rebels' contact with the village contribute to an agreement to cooperate. Their knowledge of forest routes and improvised traps helps offset an Imperial force that expects a technological advantage.

During the assault, Ewoks and Chewbacca commandeer an AT-ST, and Han's team destroys the shield generator. Lucasfilm's Databank explicitly credits Ewok participation in defeating Imperial troops and walkers. Anthropologically, this is an alliance between different societies whose capabilities cannot be ranked simply by their equipment. The Ewoks have agency, leadership and local strategic knowledge.
