The shield is still active

Alliance ships arrived expecting the Endor commandos to have disabled the Death Star's protective shield. Instead, an Imperial fleet was waiting and the shield remained operational. Emperor Palpatine had leaked information designed to draw the Rebels into a confrontation where they could be surrounded and destroyed.

Fighting beside the Imperial fleet

Admiral Ackbar understood that a retreat might be the safest option, but Lando Calrissian urged him to remain and engage the Imperial warships at close range. This reduced the second Death Star's opportunity to attack distant Rebel ships without harming nearby Imperial vessels.

The Executor falls

The combined Rebel fleet and starfighter action damaged the Super Star Destroyer Executor, sending it crashing into the Death Star. At the same time, the ground assault began turning in the rebels' favor, eventually removing the station's protective shield.

Anthropological analysis

Fleet command is a collective decision-making practice under uncertainty. Ackbar and Lando had to coordinate different groups with limited information and accept immediate losses to preserve the chance of an allied success.

Did the Rebel fleet arrive to find an unshielded and undefended station?

No. The Empire had prepared a trap and the shield was still active.

Holding position while the ground mission continues

Admiral Ackbar leads the Alliance fleet into a trap: the Death Star's shield is still active and Imperial warships block withdrawal. Lucasfilm states that Ackbar initially favors retreat, but Lando argues that the fleet must give Han Solo's commandos additional time. The commanders adapt by engaging the Imperial fleet at close range.

The battle is a coalition command problem, not merely a contest between large ships. Starfighters, fleet commanders and the ground operation must coordinate under incomplete information. The tactical choice to remain exposes crews to heavy losses in order to protect an uncertain opportunity. This distinction explains why Endor's space battle and the bunker assault deserve related but separate records.
