After helping Canderous recover Mandalore's Mask, Revan prepared to retrace his pre–Jedi Civil War path into the Unknown Regions. He left Bastila Shan, who was pregnant with their child, because he believed knowledge of the mission would put her and the Republic in greater danger. Revan disappeared from known galactic politics.

REVAN DEPARTS AGAIN: source evidence and social context
Chronology and documented limits
In 3954 BBY, Revan followed recovering memories and the evidence of the hidden Sith Empire. After helping Canderous reclaim Mandalore’s Mask, he left Bastila Shan, then pregnant with their son, and began an investigation in the Unknown Regions. The Old Republic: Revan novel provides the main later account. This is a second journey and must be distinguished from the immediate post-Malachor search undertaken years earlier.
Institutions, beliefs and material consequences
Revan understood secrecy as protection against an unknown enemy, but the decision also imposed uncertainty on family members denied information or participation. A public figure celebrated for defending the Republic disappeared from its political landscape as a spouse and future parent. The contrast between strategic independence and domestic obligation is central to this history without implying that Bastila’s private experience can be reconstructed in unrecorded detail.

Secrecy is treated as protection
Revan withheld information from the people closest to him because he believed the hidden Empire could exploit them.
Protection and exclusion become difficult to separate.
A public hero becomes absent
The Republic loses the person most associated with victory over Malak.
His disappearance creates a gap between public memory and the continuing threat he privately investigates.
Anthropological assessment
Revan's departure shows how secrecy redistributes risk rather than eliminating it.
People denied information may be protected from one threat while losing the ability to consent to decisions shaping their own lives.
A public hero becomes a missing family member
Revan's recovered memories convinced him that the Sith Empire encountered beyond known space posed a threat greater than the defeated forces of Malak. He left the Republic and Bastila, who was pregnant, after helping Canderous recover the Mask of Mandalore. The resulting journey was deliberately secret, making it very different from an openly announced Republic expedition.
Public memory could treat the Star Forge victory as the end of Revan's story. His family experienced an unfinished one, marked by uncertainty and the need to raise a child without him. Revan believed secrecy offered protection, but withholding information also removed other people's ability to make informed choices about the same danger. Both outcomes belong in his biography.
Was this a routine, public Republic mission?
No. Revan's secret investigation is described in the later Legends novel Revan.

A second departure is not the first disappearance beyond known space
The chronology contains more than one Revan journey into unknown territory. His earlier expedition with Malak helped set the conditions for the Jedi Civil War. The later journey described in Drew Karpyshyn's Revan follows the fall of the Star Forge and Revan’s partial recovery of the knowledge that an older Sith power survived beyond the Republic’s horizon. The novel's publisher synopsis explicitly describes that gap in his memories and his belief that a threat remains. The two episodes should not be merged simply because both involve secretive exploration and the future Emperor Vitiate.
Revan leaves after becoming involved in the recovery of Mandalore’s Mask, with Bastila pregnant and the household facing an uncertain future. A confidential journey chosen in response to a threat is not the same event as a Republic military mission formally approved by its Senate. The available publisher description documents the broad secret-threat premise but does not by itself prove the exact wording of his conversation with Bastila, the launch day or every location on his route. The novel supplies the fuller narrative and remains the source to consult for such details.
IDS approaches the departure as a distribution of knowledge and risk. Revan can control what the Republic and his family are told; those left behind cannot assess or consent to every decision made in secrecy on their behalf. That is a political and household interpretation rather than a claim that Bastila’s private thoughts are fully recoverable. The mask recovery precedes the journey, while Vaner’s birth shows a consequence of the absence at the household level.
Check the historical claim: Was the 3954 journey identical to Revan and Malak's earlier expedition?
Source-critical explanation: No. It belongs to a later stage, after Revan's return to the light and Star Forge victory. The causes and people affected are different.
