VALKORION'S PHYSICAL DEATH
Documented history and uncertainties
In 3636 BBY Marr and the Outlander appeared before Emperor Valkorion in Zakuul's throne room. Marr recognized him as Vitiate and was killed. During the encounter Valkorion's body died in an event engineered by Arcann, with the precise participation of the Outlander affected by the game's choices. Arcann accused the Outlander and claimed the Eternal Throne. Valkorion's essence entered the Outlander's mind, so his physical death did not end his ability to influence others. Further mental confrontations occurred in 3630, with a surviving imprint finally addressed in 3626.
Anthropological analysis
Arcann's succession demonstrates how control of the public account of a ruler's death can support a claim to power. Valkorion's survival as a disembodied presence complicates the distinction between the death of a sovereign's body and the persistence of coercive political authority. The story separates what was witnessed in court from the secret manipulation of another person's mind.
Compare evidence and later interpretation
Separate the event dated 3636 BBY from its later political and biographical consequences. Exact dates, casualty figures and personal motives are not inferred when the surviving records do not provide them.

Anthropological assessment
Succession crises can occur even when a ruler's death is ambiguous. Institutions still need an immediate answer to who commands.

A sovereign's physical death does not resolve who controls his legacy
The throne-room encounter brings together Darth Marr, the Outlander, Valkorion and Arcann amid revelations about the concealed Zakuulan empire. The game’s official character descriptions identify Valkorion as an incarnation of the ancient Sith Emperor and say Arcann engineered the treachery that brought him down. Player choices can affect how the immediate act occurs. The sequence is therefore better described as Valkorion's physical death and Arcann's accession than as a fixed eyewitness account of the Outlander intentionally killing the ruler in every possible storyline.
Arcann presents the Outlander as responsible and uses the crisis to establish himself as ruler. At the same time, Valkorion’s consciousness persists within the Outlander. The difference between bodily absence, formal succession and ongoing influence gives the episode its particular significance. The public institutions of Zakuul must accept a visible new monarch, although the secret victimization of another person's mind remains outside their knowledge. Neither the royal succession nor the physical death settles the fate of the Eternal Fleet.
IDS reads the scene as a dispute over evidence and legitimacy. The person controlling the official explanation of a ruler's removal gains an advantage over anyone unable to speak publicly. The expedition’s earlier capture explains how the protagonists reached the court. The later mental confrontation documents the ruler's continuing attempt to possess another body and should never be backdated to 3636.
Historical source test: Did the loss of Valkorion's body end his influence on the Outlander?
Explanation: No. SWTOR describes him entering the Outlander's mind. The body's death precedes later conflicts over possession.
