ARCANN'S ETERNAL CONQUEST
Documented history and uncertainties
After Arcann seized the throne in 3636 BBY, Zakuul expanded its attacks into the systematic conquest of both Republic and Sith territories. Its Eternal Fleet outmatched traditional navies and damaged vital shipyards, eventually forcing both old powers to accept tribute and strategic restrictions. This was the beginning of a prolonged domination rather than an immediate five-year jump to the Outlander's rescue in 3631. Arcann's regime relied on the inherited Zakuulan military system, including its automated naval command structure.
Anthropological analysis
An established international order can be transformed by a new empire that monopolizes key military technology. Tribute extracted wealth from defeated populations and made conquest an everyday economic experience. Local governments remained recognizable but had lost power to decide fundamental matters of war and supply. Their submission was evidence of overwhelming coercion, not automatic acceptance of Arcann's legitimacy.
Compare evidence and later interpretation
Separate the event dated 3636 BBY from its later political and biographical consequences. Exact dates, casualty figures and personal motives are not inferred when the surviving records do not provide them.

Anthropological assessment
A third power can reorder a bipolar political system by defeating both sides faster than either can adapt.

Arcann converts inherited military capacity into territorial dominance
Arcann's assumption of the Eternal Throne gives him access to the fleet and government accumulated under Valkorion. The resulting attacks are not simply a continuation of unidentified raids: the new emperor mobilizes an established force to subordinate the two major powers of the galaxy. The SWTOR retrospective describes both the Republic and Sith Empire as ultimately unable to resist the Eternal Fleet. It also emphasizes the subsequent multi-year order of domination, which should not be compressed into one day of fighting in 3636 BBY.
Success at sea or in space does not by itself establish a functioning system of imperial extraction. Military victories must be translated into restrictions on defeated governments and continuing access to their resources. The Republic and Sith Empire remain recognizable rather than being completely erased. Their loss is the ability to act independently in strategic matters. The specific terms of every submission agreement or tribute schedule should not be reconstructed solely from the official plot synopsis, which presents the overarching political change.
IDS examines sovereignty under coercion: an institution may retain a title and buildings while another authority determines what decisions it is allowed to make. Arcann's accession is the dynastic turning point, whereas the subsequent period of tribute and occupation shows how a military outcome becomes a continuing political system. Conquest and stable rule require different evidence.
Historical source test: Were Republic and Sith institutions abolished as soon as the Eternal Fleet attacked?
Explanation: No. They survived under coercive limits. The loss of independence is different from the disappearance of every government office.
Official developer evidence: Official SWTOR recap: Arcann's conquest. This official game-retrospective describes the arc, not every quest branch or individual combat scene. Chronology dates derive from the published Legends game timeline, and political or anthropological interpretations are original IDS analysis rather than official character dialogue.
