ZAKUUL CONSOLIDATES ITS CONQUEST

Historical facts and chronology

After Arcann's 3636 conquest the Republic and Sith Empire remained recognizable governments but operated under coerced restrictions. In the years 3635–3632 BBY they paid tribute while the Eternal Fleet enforced Zakuulan superiority. The frozen Outlander remained in carbonite; opposition persisted in scattered groups. These years represent occupation and consolidation, not a claim that every galaxy-wide surrender occurred on the same date. The later Alliance drew support from political communities denied independent control of military and economic resources.

Anthropology and political consequences

Imperial dominance could operate through tribute, fleet patrols, trade restrictions and dependency even where local senators or ministers retained their titles. Submission was not popular consent. The gap between formal government and effective sovereignty shaped communities across both defeated states. A stable bureaucracy of extraction also created the material grievances around which disparate resistance movements would later organize.

Anthropological assessment

Conquest can preserve defeated governments because indirect rule is cheaper than total occupation. Tribute converts military superiority into an ongoing economic relationship.

Expanded Legends archival analysis

Occupation lasts longer than a campaign

A rapid conquest may defeat a navy while leaving the task of administering many systems unresolved. During the years following the arrival of Arcann's Eternal Fleet, the Republic and Sith Empire remain recognizable but lack the freedom to pursue ordinary strategic independence. The official retrospective describes an extended period of Zakuulan dominance while the Outlander remains imprisoned.

A tribute relationship extracts resources from conquered communities without necessarily replacing every local civil office. This can produce an unequal arrangement where officials still issue orders but must consider the threat of punishment from a stronger state. Such indirect control is materially different from holding every street with Zakuulan troops. The archive should therefore avoid claiming an identical occupation structure on every planet.

These years also explain why the return of the Outlander cannot simply reactivate old alliances. Officers and civilians have adjusted to new constraints; some people have been killed, displaced, or forced to change allegiances. Building a resistance requires restoring trust and infrastructure, not merely presenting an individual heroic leader to a waiting galaxy.

Tribute turns an invasion into a continuing extraction system

The years after Arcann's conquest are historically distinct from both the opening attack and the eventual escape of the Outlander. SWTOR’s retrospective describes approximately five years in which the Eternal Empire dominated the Republic and the Sith Empire. The older states remained in place but were politically weakened. The imprisoned Outlander could not have witnessed every change during that interval. The narrative's time jump should therefore be treated as a historical gap filled by later testimony and story summaries rather than a single event in 3631 BBY.

Tribute links conquest to material life. Payments and resource restrictions imposed from outside can change what local governments are able to supply to their own populations. At the same time, a continuing senate or imperial ministry can lend an appearance of continuity to a profoundly unequal political relationship. Neither fact proves that every system obeyed without resistance. A summary of imperial control should not become an imaginary province-by-province tax register unless the evidence identifies the specific amounts and institutions.

IDS explores indirect rule, in which a dominant power secures compliance by threatening force and taking resources while relying on some subordinate administrations. The opening invasion explains how that relationship was imposed. The rescue of the Outlander introduces a participant who must discover how much the political landscape has changed while they were confined.

Historical source test: Did Arcann have to abolish every local institution to dominate the Republic and Sith Empire?

Explanation: No. The story describes two still-identifiable governments rendered subordinate through overwhelming force and obligations.

Official developer evidence: Official SWTOR storyline: five years of rule. This official game-retrospective describes the arc, not every quest branch or individual combat scene. Chronology dates derive from the published Legends game timeline, and political or anthropological interpretations are original IDS analysis rather than official character dialogue.
