In 980 BBY, Darth Zannah challenged her master Darth Bane on Ambria and defeated him. The duel completed the first generational succession of Bane's Rule of Two, under which the apprentice was expected to surpass and replace the master. Bane attempted a dangerous transfer of his consciousness into Zannah, but she resisted him and survived. Zannah became the Dark Lord of the Sith and accepted Darth Cognus as her apprentice.
The rivalry grows inside the Order
Bane feared Zannah might wait for his age to weaken him rather than defeat him at his strongest. He sought secrets that might prolong his life, while Zannah saw the search as a betrayal of the doctrine he had taught her. Their disagreement was about both personal survival and the system's rules.
An encounter on Ambria
The confrontation followed incidents involving the Stone Prison on Doan and Bane's contact with the Huntress, who became Darth Cognus. On Ambria Zannah used Sith sorcery and dark-side tendrils against Bane's formidable strength. The contest ultimately turned on Zannah's ability to withstand his final attempt at essence transfer.
A living succession
Zannah's victory left her in command of the clandestine Sith order. Cognus agreed to serve the winning master. The line passed to a new generation without an open Sith army or formal galactic throne, confirming that the institutional design Bane developed could survive its founder's death.
Anthropological assessment
The duel shows succession institutionalized as a violent test of capability. In this system, the mentor's success was measured by producing a student able to destroy them. That rule preserved continuity through conflict rather than eliminating rivalry.

Historical sequence, material evidence and political authority
Zannah succeeds Bane on Ambria: the historical record
Zannah defeated Bane after years as his apprentice, as described in Drew Karpyshyn's Dynasty of Evil. His attempt at essence transfer failed to take control of her, leaving Zannah as Sith master. Cognus became her apprentice, demonstrating the Rule of Two could survive its founder's death.
Anthropological assessment
The duel was an institutional succession rather than just a duel of pride. The apprentice inherited an organization whose rules required challenging the master. Claims that Bane secretly possessed Zannah contradict the author's clarification of the ending and should not be stated as accepted history.
