In 3956 BBY, Darth Malak's flagship Leviathan ambushed the Endar Spire above Taris. Malak wanted Bastila Shan, whose battle meditation remained one of the Republic's greatest strategic advantages. Sith troops and Dark Jedi boarded the cruiser. Trask Ulgo sacrificed himself against Darth Bandon while Revan and Carth Onasi reached an escape pod. Bastila escaped separately to the city below before the Endar Spire was destroyed.

THE ENDAR SPIRE
Documented history and chronological boundaries
In 3956 BBY the Sith warship Leviathan ambushed the Republic cruiser Endar Spire over Taris while pursuing Bastila Shan. Sith personnel boarded the damaged vessel. Trask Ulgo held back Darth Bandon, giving the amnesiac Revan time to escape with Carth Onasi. Bastila separately reached Taris, setting up the search through the city's divided social geography. These events are established at the start of the 2003 game; Revan did not yet know his former role as a Sith Dark Lord.
People, political institutions and material life
An orbital battle becomes a ground-level story through escape pods and the survivors' need for help. The Republic's interest in protecting Bastila was linked to her battle meditation, but civilians and lower-ranked crew members also made consequential choices. Trask's sacrifice demonstrates how individuals with little formal strategic authority can alter a conflict's outcome. The event is distinct from Malak's later bombardment of Taris.

Bastila is the strategic target
Malak's campaign treated one Jedi's battle meditation as a military capability capable of shifting fleet engagements.
Capturing or killing her became more important than preserving the Republic cruiser.
Revan enters his own former war as an ordinary soldier
The reconstructed Revan experiences the Sith Empire from the perspective of one of its enemies.
His lack of memory radically changes the social meaning of every later encounter.
Anthropological assessment
The Endar Spire attack shows how individual specialists can become strategic infrastructure inside large institutions.
It also begins a story in which social identity depends on what a person and the people around them are permitted to know.
Why a cruiser became a strategic target
The Endar Spire was not attacked because it represented the largest Republic force in the sector. Its importance was the presence of Bastila Shan. The Jedi's battle meditation could strengthen coordination and morale across Republic units, so the Sith had an incentive to locate her even when other targets were available. Destroying a ship and capturing a single individual could therefore be treated as parts of the same operation. In a war against an opponent possessing the Star Forge, the Republic could ill afford to lose another scarce advantage.
Malak's forces assaulted the cruiser with both conventional boarders and Dark Jedi. The immediate military emergency forced soldiers into improvised defensive roles. Trask Ulgo's confrontation with Darth Bandon is remembered because it bought time for another person to escape, not because it changed the fleet battle. Small actions by individual defenders shaped which survivors reached the surface.
The former Sith commander does not know who he is
The player character had once commanded the Sith war machine but experienced the attack without access to that identity. This distinction is essential to the chronology: Revan's earlier capture, treatment by the Jedi, and reconstructed memories precede the Endar Spire's destruction. The game reveals the connection later. Telling the opening battle as though Revan knowingly resumed command of an old conflict would flatten the central narrative structure.
Carth Onasi and Revan escape together. Bastila reaches Taris separately, where the Sith occupation and the planet's internal divisions complicate the search for her. The Endar Spire thus initiates a chain of events connecting orbital warfare with undercity gangs, refugee communities, and an eventual escape aboard the Ebon Hawk. The attack's outcome cannot be measured only in terms of the warship lost.
What the opening sequence actually establishes
The original Knights of the Old Republic introductory level directly depicts the boarding, defense, escape and destruction. Later continuity establishes Revan's prior identity and the larger significance of Bastila's bond. Neither the game nor its later summaries require an exact complement of troops killed aboard the ship, an invented bridge conversation, or an unsupported duration for the fighting.
Anthropological extension: secrecy and trust
The attack begins a story about institutional control over information. Republic authorities rely on Revan while concealing facts about Revan from the person most directly affected. Bastila's importance also illustrates how military organizations place extraordinary burdens on a few specialists. The public story of an ordinary Republic survivor and the confidential story of a former Sith ruler coexist until the revelation aboard the Leviathan. Questions about consent, loyalty, and the right to know one's own history arise because these accounts are deliberately kept separate.

Original-source investigation: An opening attack with two levels of historical knowledge
The Endar Spire assault opens Knights of the Old Republic. The immediate objective involves Bastila Shan, while the player initially experiences the attack without knowing Revan's full history. That distinction between what the player knows at the opening and what is revealed later is important to an accurate history of the Jedi Civil War. The opening escape belongs before the later destruction of Taris.
The published game overview documents the original RPG, not every scripted encounter aboard the cruiser. The escape has fixed narrative elements even though players can make choices within the game. An article should not invent a single canonical dialogue line or assume that all potential player options happened. As military history, the assault combined an attempt at capturing a valued person with the destruction of a Republic platform.

The Endar Spire attack begins the player's story
The Republic ship was carrying a strategic target
The Endar Spire was a Republic vessel associated with Bastila Shan, whose battle meditation gave her unusual strategic importance. Sith forces attacked over Taris and boarded the ship. The opening sequence follows a Republic soldier who appears inexperienced with the wider mission and is unaware of a previous identity as Revan. This limited point of view is part of the game's design and prevents the opening scene from being treated as a complete explanation of what every officer knew.
Trask Ulgo makes escape possible
Trask Ulgo guides the player character out of the ship's sleeping quarters, explains basic procedures and confronts a hostile Dark Jedi so that the protagonist can escape. Carth Onasi organizes the evacuation route and becomes the surviving companion on Taris. This sequence should not be compressed into a claim that everyone aboard the cruiser perished or that the escape immediately brought the group to Dantooine. The destruction of the vessel and the later destruction of the planet belong to separate events.
A tutorial built around ignorance has historical significance
The game teaches the player both its controls and the protagonist's assumed place in the Republic. Later information about the Jedi Council's intervention revises the meaning of that early relationship. An anthropological reading can examine how uniform, rank, duty and compartmentalized information define who can know an operation's purpose. Those are analytical observations about the depicted institution, not a claim that the game's designers published a classified Republic crew manifest.
Check your historical interpretation: Did Revan know the Jedi Council had rebuilt his identity during the attack?
Explanation: No. At the opening of the game the player character lacks that knowledge. The historical relationship between the former Sith leader and Bastila is explained later aboard the Leviathan.
