After the Endar Spire fell, Sith forces occupied Taris and imposed a planetary quarantine. Revan and Carth moved through the socially segregated city searching for Bastila. Their route brought them into contact with the Hidden Beks, Black Vulkars, Undercity communities, rakghouls, Mission Vao, and Zaalbar. The military search for one Jedi therefore unfolded inside social divisions that had existed long before the Sith arrived.

TARIS UNDER QUARANTINE

Documented history and chronological boundaries

After the Endar Spire was destroyed, Sith troops controlled travel in and out of Taris while Malak's forces searched for Bastila. Revan and Carth navigated the Upper and Lower Cities and the Undercity, encountering swoop gangs, refugees, rakghouls and unequal treatment of alien residents. Existing city hierarchies predated the Sith occupation. The quarantine restricted movement but did not create all the social problems the characters observed.

People, political institutions and material life

Occupation is felt through checkpoints, permits, surveillance and the unequal ability to avoid danger. The same security policy affected an elite resident, a gang member and an Undercity refugee differently. Revan's quest depended on relationships outside official institutions and on people whose knowledge of local streets exceeded that of the occupying fleet. The story provides a case study in how imperial power operates through existing inequalities.

Occupation overlays an already divided city

Taris was structured by class and species hierarchy before the Sith arrived.

Military rule did not erase those inequalities; it operated through and around them.

The search depends on people outside formal institutions

Mission, Zaalbar, gangs, smugglers, and local residents provided information the Republic military could not.

Survival depended on informal urban networks.

Quarantine turns mobility into power

Sith control of transport made leaving the planet a strategic problem.

Access to ships, codes, and local routes became more valuable than ordinary legal status.

Anthropological assessment

The Taris occupation demonstrates how military power interacts with preexisting urban inequality.

People at the margins of formal authority can become indispensable because they possess local knowledge and networks unavailable to occupying forces.

The Old Republic / connected history

A military quarantine overlays an unequal city

The Sith blockade and occupation of Taris followed the destruction of the Endar Spire. Sith personnel searched the urban world for Bastila Shan while restricting movement through the spaceport and city districts. The planet was already deeply stratified: the prosperous Upper City, the dangerous Lower City and the marginalized Undercity were separated by barriers of wealth, species prejudice and access. The occupation did not invent these divisions. It exploited a geography in which authorities and privileged residents already controlled who could move between levels.

Revan and Carth's attempt to find Bastila therefore depended on overcoming more than checkpoints. Local gangs, street residents, refugees, droids, rakghouls and communities facing social exclusion formed the environment through which the pair moved. Mission Vao and Zaalbar provided knowledge unavailable from official Republic channels. As the search progressed, the importance of transport codes, security access and a ship became obvious: the Sith's greatest advantage was not merely having soldiers in the streets, but their ability to determine who could leave the planet.

Occupation inherits social infrastructure

When an invading military arrives, it may govern through existing roads, policing rules and housing divisions. Taris's vertical organization made controlled access especially visible. Military quarantine intensified old inequalities because the residents least able to obtain documents or protection were also least able to escape.

Everyday expertise becomes intelligence

The occupation shows why information does not reside solely with commanders. People who navigate informal markets and neighborhood routes can understand a city more deeply than occupying forces that possess weapons and formal maps. This expertise mattered to the survival of Revan's party, but did not give ordinary inhabitants equal power over the broader conflict.

Did the Sith create Taris's species and class segregation?

No. Those inequalities already structured Taris. Sith rule added a military blockade and new forms of surveillance to the existing social geography.
