Republic and Sith forces set aside their own battle on Ilum long enough to attack Malgus's New Empire. Malgus was defeated and his movement collapsed.

Darth Malgus defeated on Ilum
What actually happened and when?
Darth Malgus announced a breakaway New Empire around 3640 BBY and used military forces and a stolen Imperial battlestation to advance his bid for power. On Ilum, both the Republic and established Sith Empire opposed his challenge for different reasons. Operations associated with the Battle of Ilum and the False Emperor flashpoint defeated his immediate movement. Later Star Wars: The Old Republic stories demonstrate that Malgus survived, so an article should not declare his permanent death in 3640. The defeat was not a lasting Republic–Imperial peace treaty.
Identity, institutions and anthropology
Malgus presented the New Empire as less bound by hereditary Sith blood status, but the project still used coercive military authority. Opposition from both existing governments illustrates how enemies can temporarily share an interest in defeating a third force without resolving their broader conflict. Ilum also highlights the strategic significance of rare crystals, fleets and technological production. Political reform claims must be evaluated separately from how a regime actually governs.
Interpret the chronology without turning inference into fact
This archive distinguishes the recorded action in 3640 BBY from later outcomes and adaptations. Public reports, intelligence assessments, retrospective histories and characters' private claims are not automatically equivalent types of evidence. Events without an exact contemporary date are marked approximately.

Anthropological assessment
Temporary coalitions reveal that enemy categories are strategic rather than absolute. Groups may cooperate when a third threat changes the hierarchy of danger.

Two enemies respond to Darth Malgus's new regime
Darth Malgus's break with the Sith Empire transformed the conflict on Ilum from a struggle between two states into a confrontation with a third military project. His forces possessed knowledge of Imperial command, access to experimental technology and an ambitious plan to replace the old Empire while also conquering the Republic. The official Battle of Ilum description presents his fleet as attacking both sides when they were already weakened by their rivalry.
Republic and Imperial teams moved against Malgus because his independent battlestation and experimental fleet threatened both organizations. The confrontation did not mean the historical rivalries between them had vanished. The coalition was formed around a limited operational objective: stop the immediate attempt to overthrow the old political order and attack both powers. The flashpoint is presented as available to players of either original faction, so its shared strategic outcome must be distinguished from specific party membership and dialogue choices.
An external threat redraws cooperation
A state can temporarily cooperate with an enemy if a new opponent threatens the foundations of both states. The existence of a coalition is evidence that political categories are conditional in wartime, not that all earlier grievances suddenly become irrelevant.
Ilum is not only a battlefield
The planet's crystals and strategic position mattered to Force-using organizations and military forces alike. Control of materials and transport is part of the political history of the campaign. An archive should explain what was at stake without inventing a universal player's route across the surface.
Did the Republic permanently join the Sith Empire after Malgus was defeated?
No. The official flashpoint describes a temporary response to a traitorous third power, not a permanent merger of governments.

Historical context: The struggle on Ilum
Malgus's breakaway project exposes tensions within the Sith Empire rather than a simple Republic–Empire division.
Anthropological perspective: A military event is also a struggle over legitimacy, resources and the institutions that shape daily life. These connections are interpretive rather than additional unrecorded plot events.
