A hidden Sith fleet emerges
Palpatine had secretly survived through Sith cloning and unnatural means and assembled an immense fleet of Star Destroyers on Exegol, many equipped with planet-killing weapons. In 35 ABY the Resistance learned that his Final Order could rapidly bring the galaxy under renewed Sith rule.
Rey confronts the Emperor
Rey traveled to Exegol seeking to stop Palpatine, who attempted to use her as a vessel for continuing his own existence. Ben Solo, formerly Kylo Ren, returned to help her and rejected the First Order identity he had adopted.
Civilian ships join the fight
Poe Dameron and Finn led a Resistance attack as Lando Calrissian brought a vast gathering of ships from around the galaxy. Their intervention allowed the Resistance to defeat the Sith fleet while Rey used the Force to destroy Palpatine.
Anthropological assessment
Exegol brings an openly organized popular response against a secret authoritarian project. The battle's outcome rests on the willingness of diverse communities to act together rather than rely on the resources of one standing navy.

Did a single Resistance fighter destroy the entire Final Order fleet alone?
No. A large coalition of civilian and military ships joined the attack while Rey confronted Palpatine.
Select a perspective on the story:
A coalition challenges the Sith Eternal fleet
Palpatine prepares the Final Order on Exegol, but navigation limits constrain the Star Destroyers' departure. Resistance forces exploit the weakness, and Lando and Chewbacca bring a large civilian fleet to help. On the surface of a command ship, Finn, Jannah and allies attack the navigation signal while Rey and Ben confront Palpatine.
The battle is a coordinated campaign involving many organizations, not solely one duel between powerful Force users. Acknowledging local pilots, civilian vessels and specialized ground teams avoids the mistaken conclusion that the political conflict ends automatically when Palpatine is destroyed. The scale of the coalition expresses opposition across social groups, though not unanimity from every world.

Navigation, logistics and the citizens' fleet at Exegol
The Resistance's attack on Exegol does not begin with an already assembled galaxywide navy. Rey broadcasts a navigable course to a hidden Sith world, and a smaller Resistance force attempts to exploit weaknesses in the fleet's departure procedures. The Sith Star Destroyers depend on a navigational signal to leave Exegol's turbulent atmosphere safely. When the intended ground beacon is no longer the route source, Finn identifies a signal coming from a command vessel. The effort to disable it becomes a dangerous boarding action involving Finn, Jannah and their allies.
Lando Calrissian and Chewbacca arrive with ships crewed by people from many worlds. Their intervention helps turn a battle the Resistance is close to losing. Meanwhile Rey confronts Palpatine within the Sith citadel, and Ben Solo arrives to support her. The confrontation below and the action among the Star Destroyers are separate fronts. Palpatine drains energy from Rey and Ben to strengthen himself, but Rey eventually redirects his destructive power against him. Lucasfilm's detailed Finn and Rey biographies establish these complementary events without reducing the battle to the effort of a single pilot or Jedi.
IDS analyzes the citizens' fleet as a coalition assembled through communications, trust and a shared threat rather than through a single state's command. It also records the essential contributions of technical labor and ground teams. See the attack demonstrating the superlaser threat and later or simultaneous uprisings. The victory over the Sith fleet does not itself document a final political settlement for every world.
