A retreat to an abandoned Rebel outpost

After escaping the First Order's fleet, Leia's surviving forces sought refuge on Crait, a world once used by earlier Rebels. The First Order advanced a heavy siege cannon against the fortified entrance.

An apparently impossible confrontation

Luke Skywalker appeared before Kylo Ren and faced an overwhelming concentration of weapons without seeming to suffer harm. Luke was projecting himself through the Force from Ahch-To, using an extraordinary technique to divert attention away from the escaping Resistance.

The last act of the Jedi Master

Rey helped the surviving fighters escape aboard the Millennium Falcon. Luke's Force exertion proved fatal, and he became one with the Force while looking toward the sunset on Ahch-To.

Anthropological assessment

Luke's final stand is a public symbol as much as a military maneuver. It enables a small group to survive and transmits a story that resistance remains possible even when an apparently stronger state claims total victory.

Was Luke physically standing on Crait throughout the duel?

No. He projected his image through the Force while remaining on Ahch-To.

A nonviolent diversion preserves survivors

The Resistance retreats to an old Rebel facility on Crait, but First Order forces close in. Luke appears to confront Kylo Ren outside the base, holding the attackers' attention while surviving Resistance members find another route out. The confrontation is a Force projection: Luke's body remains on Ahch-To, and he dies after the extraordinary effort.

The action is not a conventional victory measured by territory captured or enemy casualties. Luke uses reputation, perception and timing to protect a small community. The final escape also requires Rey, Chewbacca and the Millennium Falcon. Heroic attention to a single Jedi should not erase that cooperation or imply the First Order is defeated at Crait.

A projected encounter and a real escape

The Resistance arrives at Crait after losing ships and personnel during its retreat from D'Qar. The abandoned Rebel installation provides temporary shelter, but the First Order's ground attack threatens the remaining defenders. Luke Skywalker appears and confronts Kylo Ren outside the base. The central factual distinction is that Luke has not physically traveled there from Ahch-To. The official Luke Skywalker Databank confirms that he projects himself through the Force to Crait, diverting Kylo while the Resistance prepares its escape.

The intervention neither destroys the First Order nor establishes that the Resistance won a conventional ground battle. The apparent duel holds the enemy's attention and gives survivors time to find a route out. Rey helps lift the obstruction that prevents them reaching the Millennium Falcon. Luke dies on Ahch-To after the effort, and his action becomes a story that spreads hope. This sequence should not be collapsed into an assertion that Luke physically fought and died on Crait's surface.

IDS interprets the event through reputation, shared memory and the political effects of a symbolic act. The projected encounter uses Kylo's expectations about his former teacher to change the immediate behavior of the enemy command. See Holdo's earlier action and Rey's time on Ahch-To to distinguish the linked but separate efforts through which the Resistance survives.
