Fuel scarcity creates an impossible pursuit

The Resistance fleet had been tracked through hyperspace and worn down by First Order attacks. With Leia injured, Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo took command and prepared a secret evacuation in smaller transports bound for an old Rebel facility on Crait. Poe Dameron misread her secrecy as inaction and organized a mutiny. Leia recovered in time to stop him, but the operation had already been compromised by information sold to the First Order.

Transports are discovered and destroyed

The First Order began firing on the unarmed transports as they fled the Raddus. Several were destroyed, and the evacuation threatened to become a massacre. Holdo remained alone aboard the nearly empty cruiser while the surviving ships struggled to reach their destination. The moment forced a commander to choose between saving herself and using her last available asset to protect others.

The hyperspace collision

Holdo turned the Raddus toward Snoke's flagship and entered hyperspace on a trajectory through the Supremacy. The impact tore through the enormous vessel and damaged other First Order ships. Holdo died, but the interruption allowed additional transports to reach Crait. It was an extraordinary sacrifice, not evidence that every warship could safely or reliably be used as a routine hyperspace missile.

Anthropological assessment

The maneuver is a study of command, trust and sacrifice. Holdo withheld sensitive information for operational security, while Poe interpreted silence as institutional failure. The story tests how leaders explain decisions when disclosure itself may increase danger, and how followers judge authority amid uncertainty.

Was the Supremacy destroyed before the Resistance tried to evacuate in small transports?

No. The transports came under attack, and Holdo's collision was a desperate response.

A sacrificial intervention during the evacuation

Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo commands the surviving Resistance ships as the First Order pursues them. Her plan to launch small transports toward Crait is compromised, and she remains aboard the Raddus. She sends it through hyperspace into the Supremacy, damaging enemy vessels and giving the evacuees a chance to survive.

The decision is inseparable from conditions of extreme scarcity and contested command. The scene provides a fictional example of self-sacrifice under immediate threat; it is not a measured account of universally reliable hyperspace tactics. Poe's frustration and Holdo's secrecy show how limited information can erode trust inside even a common political cause.

A last intervention during an evacuation

The Resistance is low on fuel and under pursuit when Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo takes responsibility for moving the survivors from the Raddus to transports bound for Crait. The First Order learns about these transports after DJ reveals the plan. The Supremacy, Snoke's mobile capital and a huge industrial and military installation, participates in the attack. The official Supremacy Databank confirms that Holdo drives the Raddus into hyperspace along a course intersecting the larger warship, tearing it apart.

The event is not a routine successful evacuation. Several Resistance transports are destroyed before Holdo's intervention, and the survivors still have to take refuge in an abandoned Rebel base on Crait. Her attack interrupts a deadly bombardment but does not, by itself, destroy the First Order. A timeline should not assert a complete general physical theory of hyperspace collisions based on this one extraordinary maneuver. Its narrative role is to provide the threatened transports a chance to escape.

IDS distinguishes a command decision, its technical means and its human consequences. Holdo's sacrifice belongs to an institutional effort to preserve a threatened community, while earlier disagreements with Poe reveal disputes about military judgment and information sharing. For context, compare the retreat from D'Qar with the final withdrawal from Crait. These are sequential but not interchangeable acts of defense.
