After Starkiller Base, the Resistance is still vulnerable

The destruction of Starkiller Base had not broken the First Order's conventional military strength. With the New Republic's political center destroyed at Hosnian Prime, General Leia Organa had to evacuate her small Resistance organization from its exposed base on D'Qar. A large First Order fleet approached as personnel, aircraft and equipment were still preparing to depart. The immediate priority was preserving the Resistance's remaining leadership and operational capacity, not winning an open fleet battle.

Poe attacks the Fulminatrix dreadnought

Poe Dameron led a risky assault against a Mandator IV-class siege dreadnought commanded by Captain Canady. The plan combined the maneuverability of his X-wing with slow MG-100 StarFortress bombers. The Resistance destroyed the dreadnought, but every bomber was lost, including the ship crewed by Rose Tico's sister Paige. Leia judged the attack a costly failure of leadership, even though its immediate tactical objective was achieved. Poe's insistence on continuing had consequences for the people under his command.

The First Order follows through hyperspace

The surviving ships jumped away, believing distance would permit their escape. Instead, the First Order tracked the fleet through hyperspace using technology that invalidated a central expectation about safe retreat. Leia's flagship, the Raddus, became the center of a slow pursuit in which dwindling fuel and limited transport capacity mattered more than the number of battlefield victories the Resistance had won.

Anthropological assessment

D'Qar is a study in command responsibility and how military heroism is evaluated. Destroying a dangerous enemy vessel is not the same as preserving the lives and capabilities of a community. The deaths among the bombers also reveal the institutional consequences of treating volunteer crews as expendable resources while pursuing a symbolic victory.

Did Leia commend Poe for preserving all Resistance bombers?

No. The dreadnought was destroyed, but the bomber wing was lost, and Leia demoted Poe for disobeying her orders.

An evacuation while the fleet is attacked

The First Order rapidly attacks the Resistance base on D'Qar. Poe's starfighter campaign destroys a dreadnought, but the battle costs Resistance bombers and crews, including Paige Tico. Leia's forces evacuate and try to outrun a pursuing fleet; the immediate situation is not one in which the Resistance can defend a permanent territorial headquarters.

The command dispute over Poe's tactics concerns competing obligations: destroying a powerful enemy ship versus preserving a smaller movement's irreplaceable personnel. In an unequal conflict, even a tactical victory can be a strategic setback. Paige's death also matters beyond a casualty count because her sister Rose later enters the story with a personal history of loss.

Is the dreadnought's destruction cost-free to the Resistance?

The victory at Starkiller did not make D'Qar secure

D'Qar served as Leia Organa's hidden Resistance base, and its fighters launched the assault on Starkiller Base from that world. The First Order traced the movement back to its source. As The Last Jedi begins, the Resistance rushes to escape before bombardment destroys the installation. Lucasfilm's D'Qar Databank confirms the connection between the Starkiller strike, the exposed base and the hurried withdrawal. The outpost's destruction does not mean the entire Resistance population was killed there: surviving ships departed during the battle.

Poe Dameron's attack on the First Order dreadnought creates another distinction. The dreadnought is destroyed, but the Resistance loses bombers and experienced crews, a cost central to Leia's dispute with Poe. The First Order's subsequent ability to follow the retreating fleet through hyperspace creates the next crisis. These stages occur within a chain of events, but the hyperspace tracking and the dreadnought attack are not the same operation. A simple victory-or-defeat label overlooks why Leia values preserving surviving people over inflicting maximum damage on enemy equipment.

IDS reads the evacuation as an institutional problem of survival under constrained resources. Ships, fuel, maintenance crews and pilots are material assets the Resistance cannot readily replace. This is an interpretation grounded in the depicted losses, not a calculated estimate of its total personnel. Compare the earlier raid and the later fleet evacuation to distinguish successive tactical decisions.
