An attack on the planet-sized weapon
Following the Hosnian catastrophe, the Resistance organized an urgent mission to destroy Starkiller Base before it could fire again. Han Solo, Chewbacca and Finn infiltrated the installation while Poe Dameron led the attacking starfighter units.
A sabotage mission opens the target
The infiltration team lowered the base's shields and damaged critical systems. Han confronted his son Ben Solo, now known as Kylo Ren, and was killed. Rey and Finn fought Ren while the system began to collapse.
A small force achieves a major result
Poe and the Resistance pilots struck the base's critical components, triggering a chain reaction that destroyed the weapon. The Resistance escaped, but the First Order retained substantial fleets and political capacity, so the immediate victory did not end the war.
Anthropological assessment
The attack repeated a pattern from Yavin: a smaller coalition relied on specialized knowledge and coordinated risk to defeat a superweapon. The price included personal losses and the recognition that victory against one installation was not victory against the larger regime.

Did destroying Starkiller Base end the First Order immediately?
No. The First Order remained capable of devastating attacks after its superweapon was lost.
Select a perspective on the story:
Sabotage and starfighter attack combine
The Resistance plans a desperate attack against Starkiller Base after the Hosnian catastrophe. Han Solo, Chewbacca and Finn infiltrate the installation, seeking Rey and weakening the weapon's defenses. Poe Dameron's pilots then attack the vulnerable infrastructure, causing the base's destruction. Han dies during the mission after confronting his son.
The mission illustrates interdependence between small teams and organized military units. Han's personal confrontation with Kylo Ren and the technical attack against the weapon belong to the same operation but accomplish different purposes. Success averts further immediate use of Starkiller Base; it does not mean the First Order loses every remaining ship or officer.

A sabotage operation and a starfighter assault are separate steps
Starkiller Base could strike remote worlds because the First Order transformed a planet into a weapon that exploited energy from stars. The official technical feature distinguishes the shield preventing entry, the base's thermal oscillator and the attack by Resistance starfighters. Han Solo, Chewbacca and Finn infiltrated the installation and forced Captain Phasma to lower its shields. Their sabotage made it possible for Poe Dameron's squadron to attack the oscillator. Describing the result as a single pilot shooting the base without assistance would obscure how the defenders' technical systems were overcome.
The First Order had already devastated the Hosnian system when the Resistance undertook this raid. The weapon's destruction stopped an immediate attack on D'Qar but did not destroy all First Order ships, commanders or supporting organizations. The next film begins with the Resistance still exposed to military retaliation. Nor did the wrecking of the oscillator somehow undo the damage inflicted on Hosnian Prime. The film presents tactical success inside a larger failure of collective planetary security.
IDS interprets the operation as an example of interdependent technical labor. Shield access, explosives, targeting knowledge and pilot coordination all had to be joined, and the outcome cannot be credited to hardware alone. Read the attack that preceded the raid and the evacuation that followed for the difference between destroying a strategic weapon and winning a war.
