The First Order makes its intentions public

The First Order had secretly built Starkiller Base, a weapon constructed around an entire planet and capable of drawing energy from a star. In 34 ABY General Hux ordered it to fire at the Hosnian system, home to the New Republic's Senate and a major fleet.

A political center is annihilated

The weapon's beam destroyed Hosnian Prime and other inhabited worlds within the system. Senators, military personnel and countless civilians were killed, and the New Republic lost much of its centralized leadership in one coordinated strike.

A state left vulnerable

The destruction paralyzed the New Republic and gave the First Order opportunities to impose authority on numerous systems. Leia's Resistance had warned that the rising military threat could not be ignored, but the state had not prepared adequately for such an attack.

Anthropological assessment

The Hosnian catastrophe demonstrates the use of mass killing against governmental infrastructure. It targeted the physical institutions through which member worlds exercised collective political representation as well as the people living near them.

Was Hosnian Prime an empty station without civilians?

No. It was an inhabited New Republic capital world, and its destruction killed an immense civilian population.

A planetary weapon strikes the New Republic's center

Starkiller Base destroys the Hosnian system, including Hosnian Prime and the New Republic's Senate and central fleet presence. This is a deliberate First Order attack against the existing political order. Kazuda Xiono's response in Resistance provides another perspective on the catastrophe, because his home is in the targeted system.

The attack destroys institutions and lives while sending a message intended to terrorize populations elsewhere. It would be inaccurate to infer that every New Republic citizen died or that all governing capacity everywhere vanished at once. Survivors and resistance movements continue, but the destruction of the central system causes a profound political crisis.

A blow against the Republic's institutions and civilian worlds

The First Order's first full-scale use of Starkiller Base targeted the Hosnian system, which contained the New Republic's Senate and important fleet assets. Hosnian Prime was not the eternal or only capital of the Republic: the restored Senate rotated among member worlds, a reform associated with Mon Mothma. Its destruction therefore killed people and struck an institution deliberately designed to distribute authority. The official Hosnian Prime Databank describes that political context; the Starkiller Base Databank confirms the weapon's attack on the system.

This should not be conflated with the later destruction of Starkiller Base. The first event was a First Order strike against the Republic, while the second was an operation by Resistance forces to disable the weapon. Nor should the death of the Senate be stated to establish that every New Republic world had instantly surrendered to the First Order. The film shows extraordinary political and military disruption; it does not enumerate the decisions of all surviving member systems or provide a trustworthy complete casualty total.

An IDS institutional analysis asks what happens when representative government, planetary populations and centralized military assets are attacked in one action. The change from rotating Senate to a devastated political center matters beyond the death of individual senators. Leia had already created the Resistance outside mainstream politics. The subsequent counterattack changed the immediate military balance without restoring the lost population or Senate.
