An Imperial successor hunts for a missing Jedi
By 34 ABY the First Order had grown into an expansionist military state under Snoke. Kylo Ren searched for a route to Luke Skywalker, while Resistance pilot Poe Dameron sought the same information from Lor San Tekka on Jakku.
A droid and two outsiders flee
After First Order forces attacked a Jakku village, BB-8 carried a fragment of the map. The astromech came into the care of Rey, a scavenger, who later encountered Finn, a stormtrooper deserting the First Order. Their escape in the Millennium Falcon brought them into contact with Han Solo and Chewbacca.
A search becomes a personal transformation
Rey had long awaited the return of her family on Jakku, while Finn had been trained within a coercive military order. The crisis forced both to redefine their allegiances through choices made outside the institutions that had governed their earlier lives.
Anthropological assessment
The meeting of Rey and Finn centers social identity and belonging. Neither began as a recognized resistance leader, but cooperation and the rejection of imposed roles made them participants in a much larger political conflict.
Interactive evidence lab
Did Finn remain a loyal First Order stormtrooper after meeting Rey?
No. He deserted and helped resist the First Order.
Select a perspective on the story:
A map, an escaped stormtrooper and a scavenger
Poe Dameron obtains a clue to Luke's whereabouts from Lor San Tekka, but the First Order attacks the Jakku settlement. BB-8 carries the map fragment and meets Rey, while Finn defects from stormtrooper service and helps her escape aboard the Millennium Falcon. The discovery depends on several people acting for different reasons, not a single prearranged rescue plan.
Rey's life as a scavenger gives her mechanical knowledge but limited access to institutions beyond Jakku. Finn's refusal to continue participating in First Order violence illustrates that military socialization does not eliminate independent judgment. Their alliance begins in distrust and necessity, not because they already share a formally declared political identity.

A partial map moves through several hands
At Tuanul on Jakku, Lor San Tekka entrusted Poe Dameron with information needed to find Luke Skywalker. The First Order's raid interrupted the transfer to the Resistance, and Poe entrusted the map fragment to BB-8. The droid eventually met Rey, who worked as a scavenger in the remains of an older conflict. Finn's refusal to continue service as a First Order stormtrooper brought another outsider into the journey. This was not a case in which Rey and Finn themselves discovered a complete map hidden in a settlement; they helped carry and protect information whose origin lay with Lor San Tekka.
Lucasfilm's scene analysis documents the invasion of the village and the transfer of the clue. R2-D2's stored records later matter to completing the route. The First Order's assault shows why personal trust, droid memory and technical fragments were central to clandestine communication. It would be misleading to state that the First Order had already destroyed Starkiller Base when the flight from Jakku began; the crisis escalated later during the same film.
The anthropological focus is the custody of information: who creates a record, who preserves it and who becomes trusted to transport it. Finn and Rey had different reasons for fleeing and did not begin as established Resistance officers. See the later Hosnian attack for the war's escalation and the raid on Starkiller for the Resistance's military response.
