The tracker sabotage fails
Finn and Rose boarded the Supremacy with DJ, intending to disable the First Order's ability to follow the Resistance through hyperspace. Before they could succeed, Captain Phasma's troops captured them. DJ had accepted payment to reveal the plan to use small transports, exposing the evacuees to lethal First Order fire. The failure illustrated how one person's private bargain can threaten a much larger community.
A former stormtrooper confronts his commander
The Holdo maneuver crippled the flagship before Finn and Rose could be executed. In the damaged hangar Finn faced Captain Phasma, the officer who had commanded him in the First Order. The combat ended with Phasma falling into the burning ship. Finn no longer treated her rank or his own training as reasons he must accept her authority.
Escape through the wreckage
Finn and Rose escaped aboard a shuttle with BB-8 and headed toward Crait. The Resistance itself was still in danger, but the failure aboard the Supremacy did not destroy the group's capacity to act. Their survival made possible the next stage of the defense and their continued partnership.
Anthropological assessment
Finn's victory concerns institutional exit and social reclassification. Formerly identified as FN-2187, he resists a military system that had defined him by a serial number and obedience. His new identity grows from relationships and actions, not from the formal approval of his former superior.

Did DJ remain loyal to Finn and Rose without accepting First Order payment?
No. DJ sold information to the First Order and betrayed their escape plan.

Former soldier and former commander confront each other
Finn's earlier identity as FN-2187 is central to his final confrontation with Captain Phasma. The First Order trained children and enforced obedience through an institutional system that treated unit assignments as more important than personal names. By The Last Jedi, Finn has openly refused that role. During the failed sabotage attempt on the Supremacy, Phasma arrests Finn and Rose Tico before they can disable the hyperspace tracker. DJ has disclosed their plans, leaving them exposed to execution by former colleagues.
Vice Admiral Holdo's collision with the Supremacy interrupts the executions. The damaged hangar gives Finn a chance to fight his former commander. Lucasfilm's Phasma Databank records the duel, damage to her distinctive chromium mask and her fall into the burning wreckage. This makes the scene part of the same military disaster as Holdo's maneuver, but the characters have separate immediate motives. The film does not show Finn defeating the entire First Order army by defeating one officer.
IDS interprets the confrontation as a struggle over institutional identity and the right to refuse enforced military service. Finn's choice cannot simply be projected onto every stormtrooper. The earlier Canto Bight search explains why he infiltrated the ship, and Holdo's intervention explains the sudden chance to escape. The official source directly documents the latter sequence.
