A voice from a supposedly dead Emperor
In 35 ABY a broadcast transmitted across the galaxy claimed that Emperor Palpatine had returned. Kylo Ren was then Supreme Leader of the First Order and regarded the message as a challenge to his authority. Rather than simply accept another ruler's claim, he searched for an artifact once held by his grandfather Darth Vader, hoping to find the hidden source of the transmission.
Corvax Fen and the wayfinder
Kylo traveled to Mustafar and fought members of the Alazmec cult in the irontree forest of Corvax Fen. Near Vader's ruined castle he recovered an ancient Sith wayfinder. The device preserved a complex navigational route into the Unknown Regions, where ordinary maps could not reliably guide a starship through dangerous anomalies. The extended novelization adds an encounter with the Eye of Webbish Bog, which does not appear in the theatrical cut.
Exegol reveals a competing order
The artifact led Kylo to Exegol, where he confronted a revived Palpatine and saw hundreds of hidden Xyston-class Sith Star Destroyers. Palpatine said that Snoke had been part of his own manipulation of Ben Solo and offered the Sith fleet to Kylo in exchange for killing Rey. The First Order's supposed independence was compromised by the existence of a separate movement that intended to absorb it.
Anthropological assessment
The wayfinder is a material example of knowledge controlling access to territory. Because the Sith guarded navigational information, possession of the object changed who could reach Exegol. Palpatine's revived authority also depended on secrecy, political myth and the ability to make older symbols of power seem newly effective.

Did Kylo Ren acquire the wayfinder from a functioning Jedi academy?
No. He took Vader's Sith wayfinder from the region around the ruined castle on Mustafar.

A broadcast claims the old Emperor's return
The opening crawl of The Rise of Skywalker reports a mysterious broadcast attributed to Palpatine. Kylo Ren searches for a Sith wayfinder, recovering one on Mustafar that leads him to Exegol. There he finds Palpatine and the concealed Sith Eternal power structure, exposing a new threat to Kylo's authority.
The broadcast is a political act designed to communicate power across distance. Its contents are reported in the film's opening text rather than presented as a detailed on-screen transmission sequence. The Sith wayfinder is material evidence within the story, not an ordinary navigation device available to any traveler.

Broadcast, sacred geography and the route to Exegol
Palpatine's broadcast changes the political situation because it claims that an emperor believed dead has resumed an active role in the galaxy. Kylo Ren, having taken command of the First Order after Snoke's death, treats the announcement as a rival claim to authority. The film shows him seeking the Sith wayfinder once possessed by Darth Vader. At Corvax Fen on Mustafar, he confronts Alazmec cultists who venerate Vader, then takes the device that permits a journey to Exegol. Lucasfilm's Corvax Fen Databank identifies the setting as a swamp near Vader's ruined castle, not a functioning Imperial command base.
The Alazmec are devoted pilgrims and guardians of a dark-side landscape. Their attachment to Vader's remains is different from Kylo's practical search for navigation data. The wayfinder is both an ancient Sith object and a technology of route preservation. Its value comes from access to a place deliberately kept outside normal galactic travel. Neither possession of the relic nor arrival at Exegol means Kylo has become unquestioned head of the Sith Eternal. He encounters a separate organization with its own soldiers, shipyards and devotion to Palpatine.
IDS interprets the artifact as an example of power maintained by restricting geographic knowledge. That is an analysis of the narrative, not an attested declaration of Sith doctrine. The later journey from Ahch-To uses navigational knowledge for a different purpose. The Exegol battle demonstrates why this hidden route becomes strategically important.
