Dating note: The Battle of Yavin marks year zero in the BBY/ABY chronology. Events immediately before it belong to 1 BBY, while the aftermath belongs to 0 ABY. This battle is the calendar reference point.
A narrow vulnerability within an immense machine
The Alliance studied the Scarif plans and found a small thermal exhaust port connected to the Death Star's reactor. General Jan Dodonna briefed fighter crews on a precise attack that could destroy the station. The target was extremely difficult, and the base on Yavin 4 was threatened with annihilation.
Rebel squadrons bear the cost
X-wings and Y-wings launched to attack the station. Many pilots, including Biggs Darklighter and Jek Porkins, died in the engagement. Darth Vader led TIE fighters against the attackers, forcing surviving pilots to continue under enormous pressure.
Luke's shot and Han's return
Luke Skywalker entered the trench with the remaining Red Squadron pilots. Han Solo returned unexpectedly in the Millennium Falcon and drove off Vader's escorts. Luke trusted the Force and fired proton torpedoes into the exhaust port, beginning a chain reaction that destroyed the station.
Anthropological assessment
Yavin marks both military victory and an institutional turning point. The alliance had converted stolen information, logistics and cooperation among diverse people into the defeat of an apparently unstoppable weapon. The victory did not end the Empire but altered expectations about the possibility of resistance.
Interactive evidence lab
Did Luke destroy the station without intelligence, teammates or assistance?
No. Galen's design flaw, Scarif's information transfer, Dodonna's planning, many pilots' sacrifice and Han's return all made the successful attack possible.

The Battle of Yavin as a historical turning point
From Scarif intelligence to Rebel victory
At Yavin 4, General Jan Dodonna explained a vulnerable thermal exhaust port after analysts examined the construction plans recovered from Scarif. Rebel squadrons then faced the Death Star's defenses as the station moved toward firing on the base. Luke Skywalker made the successful attack with support from the Force, R2-D2's assistance and the return of Han Solo and Chewbacca. The superweapon was destroyed before it could annihilate the Rebel base.
Collective action and historical dating
The victory depended on many people beyond the pilot who fired the decisive shots: Scarif's dead, intelligence workers, maintenance teams, commanders, fighter crews and refugees whose survival rested on a working alliance. Because this battle defines the zero point of BBY/ABY chronology, it is not a calendar event occurring in a separate full year called 0 BBY.
Chronology and visual source
The Battle of Yavin is the boundary between before and after Yavin dating. The genuine publisher image of General Dodonna identifies an event participant. Scarif, Alderaan and Leia's escape happened shortly beforehand in 1 BBY; the medal ceremony follows in 0 ABY.
