The Falcon is captured by a tractor beam
Han Solo, Chewbacca, Luke, Obi-Wan and the droids arrived at Alderaan's former coordinates and found only wreckage. The Death Star's tractor beam pulled in the Millennium Falcon. The visitors hid inside the ship and improvised a plan to escape.
A prison rescue amid Imperial systems
Luke learned that Leia was imprisoned aboard the station and persuaded Han and Chewbacca to help. They entered the cell block disguised as stormtroopers and freed her. The escape carried them through corridors, firefights and a trash compactor while R2-D2 worked to manipulate the station's systems.
Obi-Wan chooses not to continue fighting
Obi-Wan disabled the tractor beam and confronted Vader near the docking bay. With the younger group able to board the Falcon, he lowered his blade and allowed Vader's strike, disappearing into the Force. The survivors escaped while Imperial trackers followed their ship.
Anthropological assessment
The escape depended on teamwork among people with differing motivations and social roles. Obi-Wan's choice transferred the practical responsibility for the Jedi future to Luke, while Leia remained the political leader carrying the plans to the Alliance.

Original story and chronology
The Millennium Falcon arrived at Alderaan's coordinates after the planet was destroyed and was pulled into the Death Star. Luke, Han, Chewbacca and Obi-Wan improvised a rescue of Leia from detention. As the group returned to the Falcon, Obi-Wan confronted Vader and allowed himself to be struck down while the others escaped. Their success took them to the Rebel base, where the plans could finally be analyzed.
Social history and political consequences
The rescue depended on multiple types of work: deception, disabling a tractor beam, opening prison access and piloting a vessel. Obi-Wan's sacrifice became meaningful through a continuing relationship with Luke rather than an uncomplicated military victory. The survivors carried personal grief into an urgent collective defense.
Why 1 BBY rather than 0 BBY?
