The failed offensive preserves Imperial control of its sacred homeworld and allows the Children of the Emperor program to continue.

REPUBLIC ASSAULT ON KORRIBAN
Historical reconstruction and limits
Exal Kressh supplied Republic forces with defensive intelligence about Korriban while trying to destroy Vitiate's secret Children project. Republic ships entered the Horuset system and landing parties attacked Sith territory. Teneb Kel tracked Kressh into ancient tombs and killed her, removing the Republic's insider support. The Republic expedition was defeated, Korriban remained Imperial, and the Emperor's project survived. This is separate from the 3681 Sith reconquest portrayed in the Return cinematic.
Anthropological reading
Religious heritage and military geography overlapped: the Sith Academy and surrounding tombs were both strategic objectives and central symbols of Sith legitimacy. The Emperor's plan to dominate the bodies of his Children turns political obedience into a struggle over personhood. The Republic was prepared to rely on a Sith defector, but its operation remained vulnerable when her interests diverged from its military timetable.
What is established, and what should not be inferred?
The date 3678 BBY identifies a specific event or biographical marker. Later consequences, careers and reported beliefs should not be moved backward into this year merely because the subject became famous. When the chronology uses an approximate date, it does not establish an exact calendar day.

Why this moment matters
The Republic acts on insider intelligence but cannot convert information into a durable military victory.
Anthropological assessment
Intelligence is only one component of power.
Insider knowledge can open an opportunity without guaranteeing that an institution has the capacity to exploit it.
The Great Galactic War / documented turning point
A Sith defector opens a narrow opportunity for the Republic
During the Great Galactic War, Exal Kressh's betrayal created an opportunity for a Republic attack against Korriban. The Sith world was not an ordinary frontier planet: it contained the reestablished Academy and religious landscape through which Imperial power claimed continuity with earlier traditions. The Republic deployed a fleet and ground forces into the Horuset system, but the offensive ultimately failed to hold the planet. The campaign belongs to the narrative told in the Blood of the Empire comics rather than the earlier battle at the beginning of the war.
The attackers benefited from information supplied by an insider who understood aspects of Imperial defenses and procedures. Once fighting began, however, intelligence did not guarantee operational success. Sith forces responded, Republic landing teams suffered severe losses, and the attempt to recover the world collapsed. The event illustrates a central limit of clandestine cooperation: information can create an opening without providing the ships, supplies and political support necessary to sustain an invasion.
The meaning of Korriban exceeds its physical defenses
Korriban was the setting for Sith education and ancestral memory. Taking the planet would have threatened a source of Imperial legitimacy as well as military infrastructure. The Republic's failure therefore carried symbolic consequences distinct from the loss of vessels.
Intelligence is not occupation
Exal Kressh's knowledge helped the Republic understand when to strike, but commanders still had to defeat and hold against an organized enemy. A battle plan based on privileged information remains vulnerable when the defender has resources that the intelligence source cannot neutralize.
Is the 3678 BBY battle the initial Sith return to Korriban in 3681 BBY?
No. The Empire retook Korriban in the opening campaign. The later Republic attempt was a separate failed counteroffensive associated with Exal Kressh.

Historical context: A failed Republic counterattack
An unsuccessful attempt to retake Korriban underscores the difference between a symbolic target and an achievable operation.
Anthropological perspective: A military event is also a struggle over legitimacy, resources and the institutions that shape daily life. These connections are interpretive rather than additional unrecorded plot events.

Great Galactic War · expanded source analysis
A second battle with a different intelligence problem
Three years after the Sith returned to Korriban, a Republic counterattack exploited information supplied by Exal Kressh. This is not a retelling of the opening 3681 battle. The later expedition sought to exploit an apparent weakness in the Emperor's secret work and depended on an Imperial defector whose motives differed from those of the Republic officers. The Blood of the Empire comic supplies the character-centered account, including Teneb Kel's mission to track Kressh while broader forces fought over the planet.
The failed reconquest shows that battlefield plans depend on information that is often incomplete, dangerous to share, and tied to people whose continued cooperation cannot be guaranteed. Korriban's tombs served as a setting for the pursuit and as institutions with cultural significance to Sith practitioners. Their presence does not establish the political loyalties of everyone on the planet. The Republic defeat and the disruption of Kressh's attempt to challenge the Children project should be treated as connected but distinct outcomes.
Source hierarchy: Master Gnost-Dural's official Galactic History provides the publisher's war-wide account. For event-specific details not named in that transcript, the existing cited comic, encyclopedia, or dated Legends record takes precedence. The Jedi narrator's judgments and the IDS anthropological interpretation must not be conflated.
