An established Master rejects Jedi authority

Phanius was an Umbaran Jedi Master who gained respect within the Order. His increasing attachment to individual will and prohibited Sith teachings brought him into conflict with Jedi doctrine. His change was not an ordinary reassignment; he separated from the institution whose authority he had once represented. Legends accounts associate this process with his acquisition of Sith holocron knowledge.

From Phanius to Darth Ruin

The former Jedi adopted the identity Darth Ruin after finding and uniting surviving Sith clans. The change of name was a claim to a new source of authority, not merely a personal alias. He argued for a radical form of self-centered power and sought to revive the Sith as a political and military movement.

The departure of other Jedi

Approximately fifty Jedi followed Ruin away from their Order, producing the Fourth Great Schism. The historical account gives this group size but not the full identities or individual motivations of every participant. The schism made it possible for a rival Force tradition to grow rapidly from inside an existing institutional network.

Anthropological assessment

Institutional schisms are about authority, identity, and social networks as well as ideas. Ruin's leadership turned doctrinal disagreement into a new organization capable of military mobilization, setting the stage for a millennium of warfare.

Phanius defects during the Fourth Great Schism

Historical evidence

The Jedi Master Phanius broke with the Order and became Darth Ruin, leading around fifty other Jedi into an early New Sith faction. The Fourth Great Schism marks a religious and political rupture. The beginning of the ensuing millennium-long New Sith Wars is related but merits its own chronological account.

Social implications

Schisms involve disputes about who can define correct teaching and exercise institutional authority. Ruin's defection was not an innate property of his origin; it was a political choice by a trained member of an established order. The movement's shared departure should not be mistaken for identical motivations among every follower.
