THE GREAT GALACTIC WAR BEGINS

Documented history and chronology

In 3681 BBY Vitiate's hidden Sith Empire launched a carefully prepared, multi-front invasion of the Galactic Republic, beginning the Great Galactic War. Initial offensives targeted the Tingel Arm, Korriban, the Aparo region and important southern hyperspace lanes; later attacks destroyed Republic shipyards at Sluis Van and moved toward the resource-rich Minos Cluster. The invasion shattered the prevailing belief that Revan and Malak's defeat had ended the danger posed by organized Sith governments. The later Treaty of Coruscant occurred in 3653, roughly twenty-eight years after the opening attack; those wars and treaty negotiations do not belong to 3681.

Anthropological analysis and consequences

The event reveals how decades of hidden economic and military preparation can suddenly reconfigure public assumptions about political geography. A state known only to a few became an immediate threat to populations and supply networks. The offensive combined naval mobility with intelligence, frontier allies and control of strategic corridors. Republic citizens far from the battlefield were affected through shortages, emergency military recruitment and disputes among elected representatives. War began as a political and logistical transformation as much as a sequence of battles.

Why this moment matters

The opening is as much an intelligence failure as a military shock: the Republic misread scattered Sith survivals as remnants rather than evidence of a rebuilt state.

Anthropological assessment

Strategic surprise depends on what institutions believe is possible.

A hidden state's advantage comes partly from its enemy's confidence that it does not exist.

The hidden Sith Empire returns to open war

The beginning of the Great Galactic War marked the reappearance of a Sith state that had spent centuries outside the Republic's effective knowledge. Rather than being another isolated remnant of earlier wars, the reconstituted Empire possessed its own military organization, ideology and leadership under the Sith Emperor. Its invasion transformed the Republic's assumption that the old danger had disappeared into a strategic liability. The opening victories demonstrated preparation that could not have been created in a few weeks.

The Republic's surprise mattered politically as well as militarily. Many worlds had continued their affairs under the assumption that disputes with Sith survivors were manageable. A coordinated offensive forced new recruitment, budgeting and decisions about alliance obligations. The war's long duration should not be confused with the Treaty of Coruscant or the later Galactic War, which followed separate political stages. Official SWTOR HoloNet chronology places early Imperial advances and Republic resistance into a sequence that includes Bothawui.

Secrecy can be a state resource

A concealed political order may build institutions while others lack reliable information about its existence. Reappearance then overwhelms not only frontier defenses but also the categories through which an opponent understands the world. The Republic needed to recognize a government, not just a band of Sith raiders.

The label of war hides different experiences

The onset of conflict did not mean every Republic system was attacked on the same day. Some worlds became immediate fronts, while others experienced disruption through supplies, conscription, refugees or political fear. A dated event is the beginning of a process whose effects unfolded unevenly.

Is the Great Galactic War the same as the later Eternal Empire invasion?

No. These are distinct conflicts with different opponents, political settings and years, even though the Sith Emperor's long biography links parts of the history.

Great Galactic War · expanded source analysis

A coordinated attack fractures a dispersed republic

The Imperial return had a strategic advantage that cannot be conveyed by calling it a surprise attack. Republic authority extended across enormous distances, and its fleets were scattered between trade routes, frontier systems, and the old Sith homeworld. The Emperor exploited those divisions through simultaneous offensives and prearranged political deception. Gnost-Dural's official retrospective describes Sith-aligned puppet governments in the Tingel Arm helping turn Republic positions into traps. This makes the war's opening an attack on a system of alliances as much as a contest between warships.

The initial capture of Korriban and the longer fighting across the Outer Rim should not be assigned identical objectives. Korriban had religious and historical meaning to the returned Sith, while the seizure of hyperspace approaches and industrial capacity restricted the Republic's freedom of movement. The archive should preserve the interval separating the beginning of the conflict in 3681 BBY from the treaty in 3653 BBY. Later histories interpret the invasion as the product of generations of preparation, but claims about each individual Imperial agent require more specific evidence.

Source hierarchy: Master Gnost-Dural's official Galactic History provides the publisher's war-wide account. For event-specific details not named in that transcript, the existing cited comic, encyclopedia, or dated Legends record takes precedence. The Jedi narrator's judgments and the IDS anthropological interpretation must not be conflated.
