Six years before the Ghost crew's debut
Kanan Jarrus was living under an assumed identity and working in the Gorse system after surviving Order 66 as Caleb Dume. Hera Syndulla arrived while investigating the policies of the Imperial industrial efficiency expert Count Denetrius Vidian. The dating of A New Dawn to 11 BBY follows the official statement that its story occurs six years before the 5 BBY start of Rebels.
Economic violence on Cynda
Gorse's economy was tightly connected to the mining operations on its moon, Cynda. Vidian intended to destroy the moon in a plan that would increase industrial output elsewhere, disregarding the lives of its workers. The conflict involved local laborers, a veteran named Skelly, and the Imperial captain Rae Sloane.
A shared cause is discovered
Hera recognized Kanan's abilities and urged him to confront a regime that threatened people who had little power to protect themselves. Kanan's instinct had been to hide his Jedi past, but their collaboration helped undermine Vidian's scheme and gave him a reason to imagine a different life.
Anthropological assessment
Gorse reveals the relationship between extractive policy, economic planning, and resistance. Kanan and Hera's partnership emerges from encounters with workers and civilians rather than an already consolidated galactic rebellion.

Kanan and Hera meet in the Gorse system: verified narrative
What happened and what remains separate
John Jackson Miller's A New Dawn recounts how the former Jedi Caleb Dume, living as Kanan Jarrus, met Hera Syndulla while the Empire exploited the Gorse system. Count Denetrius Vidian pursued economic targets with a willingness to sacrifice workers and residents. Their cooperation laid the foundation for a Rebel partnership but predated the familiar Ghost crew membership of Ezra Bridger.
Power, identity and historical geography
Gorse and Cynda expose the social costs of extractive modernization imposed from above. Imperial officials treated productivity as a reason to override local safety and employment, while Kanan and Hera connected workers' survival to anti-Imperial action. Their relationship was formed through concrete shared risks, not by an instantaneous formal Rebel Alliance charter.
Chronology and source limits
The event date is a placement in Canon chronology, sometimes approximate. Books, movies and games were released in other real-world years. Character portraits from later stories do not depict every earlier scene.
