Continuity note: This story comes from the pre-2014 Expanded Universe, classified as Legends. It is not a continuation of the Canon events of Exegol in 35 ABY.
A former hero embraces authoritarian control
Jacen Solo had survived the Yuuzhan Vong War and explored diverse Force traditions. During the growing civil conflict, Lumiya convinced him that ruthless rule was necessary to avert a more terrible future. Jacen's actions increasingly placed his own predictions above the rights of other people.
A confrontation with Mara Jade
Mara Jade Skywalker discovered Jacen's danger and confronted him on Kavan. During their fight Jacen killed her, concealing his responsibility and devastating the Skywalker family. The death became part of his transformation into a Sith Lord rather than a legitimate sacrifice that Mara had consented to make.
A new Sith name
Jacen adopted the name Darth Caedus and pursued power through the Galactic Alliance Guard and his role in government. His expanding use of coercion showed how an organization claiming to protect public safety could turn into a force of surveillance and intimidation.
Anthropological assessment
The story examines a recurrent political rationalization: the belief that one individual can suspend ordinary obligations because an anticipated disaster supposedly demands extraordinary violence. Mara's killing is an intimate act with system-wide consequences.
Interactive history lab
Did Mara Jade willingly offer to be killed as a Sith initiation?
No. Jacen killed her during a confrontation, and her family did not consent to his claims of necessity.
