Darth Krayt seizes the Imperial throne; Roan Fel forms an Empire-in-exile

The Fel Empire emerged victorious in the Sith–Imperial War, but its emperor Roan Fel did not agree to surrender independent authority to Darth Krayt. The One Sith had engineered conditions in which their supposed allies would emerge with military dominance and then be vulnerable to a coup.

Victory belongs to the wrong faction

The Fel Empire emerged victorious in the Sith–Imperial War, but its emperor Roan Fel did not agree to surrender independent authority to Darth Krayt. The One Sith had engineered conditions in which their supposed allies would emerge with military dominance and then be vulnerable to a coup.

A takeover of the capital

Krayt's Sith moved against Imperial leadership on Coruscant. A body double was killed in an effort to remove Roan Fel, but the real emperor escaped. The One Sith took control of the capital and used the Empire's existing institutions to impose a new Sith-led regime.

Two Imperial claims now compete

Roan Fel and loyal Imperial Knights organized an Empire-in-exile, eventually centered on Bastion. The Galactic Alliance Remnant and surviving Jedi also resisted Krayt, but these groups did not automatically share identical political aims.

The Second Imperial Civil War

The period from 130 to 138 ABY became a new contest over who could legitimately govern the galaxy. Krayt's public title as Emperor did not erase the survival of other institutions capable of claiming public support.

Anthropological assessment

The coup illustrates how an authoritarian faction can capture an existing state rather than create one from nothing. The struggle over titles, capital cities and loyalties shows political legitimacy is neither automatic nor simply a matter of possessing superior weapons.

Star Wars: Legacy #13 →

Historical interpretation

Issue #8's archived publisher description identifies secret alliances, Imperial and Sith intelligence and Roan Fel's narrow escape from assassination. Issue #13 later describes Darth Krayt as Emperor and Fel as deposed but continuing to resist. Together they confirm that Krayt's coup did not kill the real Fel or extinguish every competing claim to rule.

Test the evidence: Was Roan Fel definitely killed during Krayt's initial coup?

Explanation: No. The publisher records for issues #8 and #13 establish that he escaped and continued opposition to Krayt.

Original-source evidence and uncertainty

The original Dark Horse series Star Wars: Legacy, introduced in its 2006 issue #0, establishes the approximate era 130 years after Yavin. Marvel's archived description of issue #13 portrays Darth Krayt as Sith Emperor and Roan Fel as the deposed ruler still resisting him. This verifies the continuing rivalry, not the precise date or military sequence of the earlier coup. The 130 ABY accession, Ossus attack and formation of Fel's exile government require their appropriate earlier original issues and chronology to be checked directly. The Roan Fel portrait is contextual character artwork.
